Celtics vs. 76ers Game 6 Analysis
The 76ers did everything right on the road in Game 5. They took the lead on a Tyrese Maxey three-pointer with seven minutes left in the first quarter and never gave it back, cruising to a crucial victory. Philadelphia shot 50.6% from the field, 40.0% from behind the arc, and out-rebounded Boston 49 to 36.
Conversely, Boston did just about everything wrong. They shot 39.8% from the field, 31.6% from behind the arc, and struggled from the free throw line, making just 25 of 34 attempts (73.5%).
Boston hasn't enjoyed much of a homecourt advantage in the postseason since 2018. In their five playoff appearances over that span, they are a combined 15-17 at home. In that same period, they are 21-13 on the road, a trend that bodes well for their chances in Game 6 but not for their chances of winning the series. As it stands, the 76ers are favorites (-184) to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Boston's three-point shooting really let them down in Game 5. Their starters were a combined 8 for 31 from behind the arc (25.8%), including 0-7 from Al Horford and 3-11 from Jayson Tatum. It was a continuation of a bad stretch of games for Tatum, who is now a combined 11-36 from three in this series (30.6%). Jaylen Brown leads Boston's starters in field goal percentage (57.1%) and three-point field goal percentage (42.9%) but is averaging 4.4 fewer shot attempts per game than Tatum, and 1.6 fewer three-point shot attempts.
To steal Game 6 on the road and bring the series back to Boston, the Celtics will either need Tatum to break out of his slump or for Brown to step into a slightly larger role if Tatum continues to struggle.
For the 76ers, Game 5 was their first victory that didn't require a 40-point performance from James Harden. Joel Embiid was dominant, but it was the play of Maxey that was the difference maker for Philadelphia. He notched his second 30-point game of the postseason and first in this series, shooting 6-12 from being the arc (50.0%) and consistently punishing Boston for giving him good looks. The 76ers lead all teams in the Conference Semifinals in three-point field goal percentage (37.9%).
Heading into Game 6, Boston can lean on the fact that they have been here before. While Philadelphia is trying to advance past the second round for the first time in the Joel Embiid era, the Celtics were in this exact same situation against the Milwaukee Bucks last season. After a fourth-quarter collapse at home in Game 5, they went on the road and won Game 6 in Milwaukee, before winning the series with a 28-point victory at home in Game 7.
History could repeat itself in this series, but for that to happen, the Celtics will need to improve on just about everything from their Game 5 performance.
