When the San Francisco 49ers selected North Dakota State QB Trey Lance third overall at the 2021 NFL Draft, a lot of fans were wondering when they'd eventually get to see him in an actual game. With Jimmy Garoppolo still under contract, some thought he'd stay as the team's starting quarterback, especially with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan saying on Sunday that Lance wouldn't get any first-team reps at training camp.
Well, it looks like Shanahan has already changed his mind after just 21 hours. Lance saw some first-team reps at practice on Monday, leaving people to wonder if there is a chance of him beginning the season as San Francisco's starting QB.
San Francisco 49ers News
It's understandable if Shanahan wouldn't want to begin the season with Lance under center. After all, he's only 21 years old and Garoppolo has a lot more experience than him. With San Francisco hoping to be one of the top teams in the NFC next year, it makes sense that a coach would want to go with a proven hand. At the same time, reporters continue to rave about how impressive Lance has been at training camp. If he keeps up that sort of play, it might make Shanahan's decision that much more difficult.
While he opted out of the 2020 college football season, Lance proved what kind of player he could become in the 2019 campaign. That year, he suited up in 16 games for North Dakota State, ending the season with 2,786 passing yards and 28 touchdowns without throwing a single interception. He was also a threat on the ground, rushing for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. Considering how the 49ers averaged 27.3 rushing attempts per game in 2020 (14th), the potential is there for him to find success at the NFL level.
Regardless of whether Lance or Garoppolo is the Week 1 starting QB, the 49ers are expected to be one of the best teams in the league next season. FanDuel Sportsbook currently has San Francisco listed as having +1400 odds to win Super Bowl 56, which is tied for fifth-best in the NFL.
