The San Francisco 49ers surprised a lot of people by trading up for the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft a few months ago. They ended up selecting quarterback Trey Lance, but veteran Jimmy Garoppolo remains the odds-on favorite to maintain his status as the Week 1 starter.
Garoppolo currently has odds set at -320 to be the starter compared to Lance's odds of +240, according to NFL odds posted on FanDuel Sportsbook. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has been consistent all offseason in his statements that Garoppolo is going to be a big part of this team.
The seven-year pro has been nothing but great while on the field with the 49ers, posting a 22-8 record as the starting quarterback. Unfortunately, injuries have been a huge part of his time in San Francisco. Garoppolo owns only one season of starting all 16 games and hasn't started more than 6 games in each of the other three years.
On the other side, Lance seems to be a developmental player that may need time to adjust to the NFL level of play. However, his talent is obvious as he totaled 2,947 passing yards and 1,325 rushing yards across 19 college games. The young QB accounted for 48 total touchdowns during that span.
It'll be interesting to see how Lance looks during training camp and if these odds will shift at all as Week 1 gets closer. The 49ers currently have the fourth-best odds to win the Super Bowl at +1300.
