MLB Same Game Parlay Bets for Friday 3/29/24

Pittsburgh Pirates at Miami Marlins

A.J. Puk Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-164)
First 5 Innings Result: Miami Marlins (-110)

Combined Odds: +170

A.J. Puk is set to make his first career start in the majors on Friday after spending the first five years of his career as a relief pitcher. With the Miami Marlins needing arms to step up due to injuries, Puk earned himself a spot in the rotation because of his performance in Spring Training.

During Spring Training, Puk was dominant to the tune of a 1.32 ERA, and he recorded 23 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched. The former first-round pick is hoping to carry over that momentum into his season-opener against a Pittsburgh Pirates squad that struggled against lefties in 2023.

While last season's numbers won't always predict what we'll see from teams this season, the Pirates had the eighth-worst strikeout rate (24.1%), the third-lowest ISO (.137), and the seventh-lowest wOBA (.307) against left-handed pitching in 2023. Jesus Luzardo -- another lefty on the Marlins -- fanned eight Pirates on Opening Day in only five innings of action.

In relief for the Marlins last season, Puk was in the 95th percentile in strikeout rate (32.2%) and 89th percentile (32.8%) in whiff rate. Puk has electric stuff that should help him rack up plenty of strikeouts versus the Pirates, which is why he boasts the most projected strikeouts (7.58) among FanDuel Research's projections.

With Puk on the bump for Miami, we'll also take the Marlins to be the team who is holding a lead after the first five innings. The Marlins secured a 5-2 lead over the Pirates in the first five innings on Thursday before Pittsburgh scored three late runs to force extra innings.

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks

Corbin Carroll to Record a Run (-200)
Christian Walker to Record 2+ Total Bases (+100)

Combined Odds: +202

It was runs galore for the Arizona Diamondbacks in their 16-1 blowout win over the Colorado Rockies on Opening Day. There were eight players who had multi-hit outings for the Diamondbacks on Thursday, with the lone outlier surprisingly being Corbin Carroll.

Carroll still managed to record two runs in the season opener as he was walked twice. After batting second against a left-handed starter, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year will likely bat leadoff against Cal Quantrill on Friday night.

Quantrill produced a minuscule 13.1% strikeout rate and 18.9% whiff rate in 2023, so he'll be inviting plenty of contact. The veteran pitcher's inability to get batters out without inducing contact is why Arizona is one of my favorite teams to stack in DFS on Friday.

Amid his award-winning campaign last year, Carroll tallied the seventh-most runs (116) in the league. On top of that, he posted a .266 ISO and .389 wOBA against right-handed pitchers in 2023.

One player who could help Carroll cross the plate is Christian Walker. Walker registered three total bases on Opening Day with a double and a single that led to two RBIs for the Diamondbacks.

The 33-year-old first baseman logged a career-high 36 doubles in 2023, and he's had 33-plus homers in back-to-back years. There's certainly a chance Walker totals two-plus bases on Friday -- and helps Carroll record a run -- by hitting his first home run of the season.

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers

Freddie Freeman to Record 2+ Total Bases (+100)
Los Angeles Dodgers Over 4.5 Total Runs (-142)

Combined Odds: +188

There aren't many opportunities for us to get Freddie Freeman at plus odds to record two-plus bases, so we'll want to take advantage of it early in the season. Freeman is one of the unique left-handed hitters who excels against both southpaws and righties in a loaded lineup for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The lefty pitcher Freeman will face on Friday will be Zack Thompson of the St. Louis Cardinals. Thompson surrendered a 43.1% hard-hit rate while he struck out left-handed batters at a slightly lower rate (23.8%) than right-handed batters (25.6%) last season.

On the other hand, Freeman dominated lefty-lefty matchups in 2023, posting a .427 wOBA, 174 wRC+, and .274 ISO with a 18.3% strikeout rate. The seven-time All-Star also led the majors in doubles (59) by a wide margin a season ago.

So far in 2024, Freeman is picking back up right where he left off last season with a five-base performance yesterday that included a home run.

Besides backing Freeman to accrue two-plus bases, we'll also put confidence in the deep lineup of the Dodgers to tally five-plus runs versus the Cardinals. Los Angeles registered the sixth-best wOBA (.338) and the second-best ISO (.207) against left-handed pitching last year.

With Shohei Ohtani and Teoscar Hernandez joining an already talented Dodgers batting order, Los Angeles has scored five-plus runs in each of their first three regular season games.
