3 MLB Player Prop Bets to Target on Tuesday 8/22/23
Player props can be useful in a variety of ways -- from taking advantage of them straight up to measuring a player's potential to produce in daily fantasy baseball on FanDuel. Here, we're going to focus on the former.
Utilizing numberFire's projections as a guide, here are some MLB player props bets that look appealing.
Please note that betting lines and numberFire's game projections may change throughout the day after this article is published. Also, the weather may be an issue in some locations.
Lane Thomas to Hit a Home Run (+500)
The Washington Nationals face a struggling pitcher and are in a spot to score some runs tonight.
That pitcher would be Carlos Rodon, who is having one of the worst years in his career. Rodon comes in allowing a .482 SLG, .356 wOBA, 5.95 xFIP, 2.42 HR/9, 52.3% fly-ball rate, and 48.5% hard-contact rate versus right-handed hitters this season.
None of that is good, and it offers opposing hitters some clear upside for power.
We'll turn to Lane Thomas for a homer tonight, which he is certainly capable of hitting. He comes in with a 165 wRC+, .419 wOBA, .250 ISO, 35.8% fly-ball rate, and 40.7% hard-contact rate versus lefties this season. He's a diamond in the rough of the Nationals' lineup and has great odds tonight.
As always, I'll add Thomas To Record an RBI (+200).
Will Smith to Record 2+ Total Bases (+100)
The Los Angeles Dodgers have a massive 5.20-run implied run total in one of the softest matchups on the slate.
They are set to take on Noah Syndergaard, who looks nothing like his former self and is worth targeting for props when he is on the mound.
Thor is having a rough go at things this season versus righties -- allowing a .393 wOBA, .554 SLG, 5.35 xFIP, 2.13 HR/9, 14.5% strikeout rate, 39.1% hard-contact rate, and 38.6% fly-ball rate in the split.
We should be jumping at a chance to find player props when a pitcher has those types of numbers.
That leads us to Will Smith, who is rocking a 122 wRC+, .350 wOBA, .156 ISO, 38.79% fly-ball rate, and 34.7% hard-contact rate versus righties.
The Dodgers are expected to score plenty of runs tonight, and we want to capture some of that production via this total bases prop.
Julio Rodriguez to Record an RBI (+125)
Julio Rodriguez is the hottest hitter on the planet.
The last week for Rodriguez has been flat-out unbelievable, with production coming from almost every at-bat. His odds to record an RBI are simply too good to pass up tonight given his recent form and today's matchup.
JRod has a 122 wRC+, .341 wOBA, .323 BABIP, .196 ISO, and 40.5% hard-contact rate versus righties this season.
He will be up against Mike Clevinger, who allows a .371 SLG, 4.58 xFIP, .307 BABIP, 0.61 HR/9, 43.4% fly-ball rate, and 5.4% HR/FB ratio versus right-handed hitters.
The last three stats there are the most interesting since the league average versus right-handed hitters this season is a 37.2% fly-ball rate, 1.21 HR/9, and 12.6% HR/FB. This means Clevinger is allowing more fly balls compared to the league average, yet he's permitting fewer homers than average.
This should indicate he is due for some regression, and it presents an opportunity for Rodriguez.
