3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Tuesday 8/8/23
Stacking is an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. Correlation drives upside, giving your lineups a slate-winning ceiling when your stacks explode.
This piece will do the digging and the dirty work each day to determine which stacks are worth rostering on FanDuel's main slate. While we want upside, we also need to factor in game theory, especially in a sport as random as baseball.
The MLB DFS heat map at numberFire is a quick way to get a feel for the overall slate and which offenses are in a good spot. You can also check out numberFire's daily fantasy baseball projections to identify the slate's best bats.
Let's look at the top stacks for today's main slate.
Boston Red Sox
Implied Total: 5.62 | Opposing Pitcher: Brady Singer
The Boston Red Sox are riding high after a walk-off grand slam last night and should be able to carry that momentum into today.
After a questionable check swing from Luis Urias was called a ball, it allowed the bases to load up for Pablo Reyes to send the Sox home happy against the Kansas City Royals. With Brady Singer on the bump, the Red Sox should be able to put some good offensive numbers together before the final at-bat as they did last night as they carry in the best implied total of the day (5.62) per numberFire.
Singer has a 5.10 ERA that shows you can get to him, though the 4.39 SIERA illustrates a better season for the righty -- even if it's still not exceptional by any stretch. The strikeout rate has lowered to 19.7%, lower than his usual numbers would set up well for Boston.
If you're looking for a name to kick off your stack with, Jarren Duran ($3,200) would be your best choice. Duran has arguably been the Red Sox's best player this season. The outfielder has a .367 wOBA, .198 ISO, and a 130 wRC+ as his speed has created problems for opposing teams and he's had some pop to go with it. numberFire's model as Duran projected for the most FanDuel points of anyone today with 12.9.
Some others to consider for a stack from the Red Sox lineup are Rafael Devers ($3,500), Masataka Yoshida ($3,200), Adam Duvall ($2,900), and Triston Casas ($2,800).
Atlanta Braves
Implied Total: 5.20 | Opposing Pitcher: Mitch Keller
Another day, another Atlanta Braves stack that is worth your consideration.
Earlier in the season, a matchup against Mitch Keller would be one you'd consider turning away from but his second-half hasn't been up to par with the first. While his season marks are still solid overall (3.88 SIERA, 3.90 FIP, 25.4% strikeout rate), the second half has seen him sit at a 4.83 expected FIP (xFIP) and 19.6% strikeout rate. The Braves should be able to have their way with Keller.
Atlanta has had the best lineup in baseball all year which will lead to having to be smart when stacking... just kidding, they're always good options when the offense is going good. Ronald Acuna ($4,800) not-so-surprisingly jumps off the page as his top-tier season continues. Acuna has a .243 ISO and a second-best .426 wOBA. Of course, the shine on his 25 home runs and 53 stolen bases has been there all season, and for good reason. While it's looking difficult, he's still chasing the 40-40 season and should be considered here to lead the stack with big numbers likely every night.
numberFire has Acuna projected for 16.1 FanDuel points -- the third-most on the slate.
Both Matt Olson ($4,400) and Austin Riley ($3,800) are projected for 13.5 FanDuel points each, surely making them options for DFS lineups. Fill out the remainder of a Braves stack with the likes of Ozzie Albies ($3,700), Travis d'Arnaud ($2,900), Marcell Ozuna ($2,900), Michael Harris II ($2,900), and Orlando Arcia ($2,600).
Chicago Cubs
Implied Total: 4.99 | Opposing Pitcher: Carlos Carrasco
The Chicago Cubs have been doing well offensively dating back to a week ago when they had 20 runs against the Cincinnati Reds so it's time to fire them up once again against Carlos Carrasco.
Carrasco has had a brutal season. There's just no better way to say it. A 5.28 SIERA and 6.00 FIP should tell you all you need to know about his year which is pretty fitting for the 2023 New York Mets.
Trade deadline acquisition Jeimer Candelario ($3,300) comes into the day as the Cubs' top projected offensive weapon for DFS lineups with numberFire expecting 12.9 points. Since joining Chicago, Candelario has had three multi-hit games including two four-hit games in that time. His respectable .366 wOBA and 17 home runs should line him up as a solid choice for the slate tonight.
Another good budget choice is Ian Happ ($3,300), who has three home runs so far in the month of August and his best overall wOBA since 2020 (.348). Stacking these two with any one of Cody Bellinger ($4,200), Christopher Morel ($3,600), Nico Hoerner ($3,500), Dansby Swanson ($3,200), and Mike Tauchman ($3,100) as they're all projected for double digits.
The Cubs have the third-best implied total of the night at 4.99 so it sets up as another potential big night.
