3 Daily Fantasy Baseball Stacks for Thursday 8/3/23

Stacking is an integral part of daily fantasy baseball. Correlation drives upside, giving your lineups a slate-winning ceiling when your stacks explode.

This piece will do the digging and the dirty work each day to determine which stacks are worth rostering on FanDuel's main slate. While we want upside, we also need to factor in game theory, especially in a sport as random as baseball.

The MLB DFS heat map at numberFire is a quick way to get a feel for the overall slate and which offenses are in a good spot. You can also check out numberFire's daily fantasy baseball projections to identify the slate's best bats.

Let's look at the top stacks for today's main slate.

Chicago Cubs

Implied Total: 5.45 | Opposing Pitcher: Luke Weaver

How can you not stack the Chicago Cubs at this point?

After scoring 20 runs against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, it almost felt impossible that they could come anywhere close to following that up -- but they sure did. Their 16 runs on Wednesday would give them a 36-run total in a two-game span, which is their best since 1897!

We're stacking them again tonight. We have to.

It helps that the Cubbies have the best implied team total (5.45) on the day against Luke Weaver, so it's not like you should second-guess this. Weaver has been a mess this season as his 6.80 ERA would illustrate. The righty has a 6.12 FIP and a weak strikeout rate of 17.0%.

The Cubs should feast.

Cody Bellinger ($4,000) should be kicking off that stack. He's turned around his career in many ways as a member of the Cubs, and you don't have to look much further than his .382 wOBA and 141 wRC+ to know that. Per numberFire, Bellinger is projected for 14.2 FanDuel points, which is the second-highest among hitters today.

Another top option includes the intriguing Christopher Morel ($4,100), who hit a tank shot yesterday. To fill out your stack, look to Nico Hoerner ($3,300) Ian Happ ($3,200), Mike Tauchman ($3,200), Dansby Swanson ($3,200), and Jeimer Candelario ($2,900).

Los Angeles Dodgers

Implied Total: 5.16 | Opposing Pitcher: JP Sears

Another day, another Los Angeles Dodgers stack worthy of your consideration.

Anytime you see the opponent as the Oakland Athletics, your signals should be going off to get whoever is facing them into the lineup. It helps when it's a team as good as the Dodgers, and they have the second-best implied team total of the day (5.16).

The A's will fire up JP Sears in this one, and, get this, he hasn't been great this year. The lefty has a 4.47 SIERA and 5.19 FIP through 21 starts, which aren't all too special. He does have a respectable strikeout rate of 22.3%, but that shouldn't scare you from this Dodgers lineup.

With the lefty on the bump, I'd favor Mookie Betts ($4,400) over Freddie Freeman ($4,300) by a smidge when it comes to picking that captain of sorts for your Dodgers stack -- but you can always roll with both.

Max Muncy ($4,000), Will Smith ($3,600), J.D. Martinez ($3,600), and Chris Taylor ($2,800) are others who can fill out the remainder of your stack.

Minnesota Twins

Implied Total: 5.01 | Opposing Pitcher: Matthew Liberatore

Fire up the Minnesota Twins in your DFS lineups.

The St. Louis Cardinals will send out Matthew Liberatore, who is making his first start in the Majors in nearly a month. In that last start, he went 1/3 inning and allowed four runs on five hits.

His overall numbers on the year are also rather inviting (5.59 SIERA; 13.9% strikeout rate) when it comes to picking the Twins tonight. With the third-best implied team total (5.01), Minnesota can have themselves a night against Liberatore.

Just for his power alone, Byron Buxton ($3,200) should be the first man up when selecting someone from the Twins' lineup. Buxton has 17 home runs this season with a stunning 54.3% fly-ball percentage, so hope for liftoff tonight.

Some other options from the Twins' lineup include Carlos Correa ($3,000), Jorge Polanco ($3,000), Willi Castro ($2,700), and Donovan Solano ($2,400) -- all coming in at value salaries for a potential big offensive day.
