With the race to the NFL Playoff picture heating up, some teams around the league have begun thinking about next season. At 6-6-1, the Pittsburgh Steelers' playoff hopes are dwindling after a season marred by poor quarterback play and bad defense.

That's exactly why Steelers fans will love their pick in NFL insider Todd McShay's first 2022 NFL Mock Draft.

Steelers Mock Draft

McShay projects the Steelers to finally address the quarterback position and a future replacement for Ben Roethlisberger, who showed his age (39) in his 18th NFL season. McShay sees Pittsburgh drafting Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback, and Heisman Trophy finalist, Kenny Pickett with the No. 12 overall selection.

Pickett is also the first quarterback selected in this mock draft class. The 23-year-old senior led the Pittsburgh Panthers to an ACC championship while throwing 42 touchdowns compared to just 7 interceptions, on top of a career-high completion percentage of 62.4%.

Roethlisberger's 43.3 QBR rating just isn't cutting it in today's NFL and his lack of mobility and arm strength has reared its ugly head, as evidenced by 6.6 average yards per pass attempt, which ranks just 22nd in the NFL.

It's the icing on the cake to see the Steelers go after a young quarterback who has captured the attention of the city while leading the Pittsburgh Panthers to their best college football season since the early 1980s.

The Steelers hold -1200 odds to miss the playoffs in 2021, according to NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
