The New York Giants were bound to make a splash during the 2022 NFL Draft as they owned the No. 5 and No. 7 overall picks. The team made that splash at No. 5, taking the somewhat divisive but high-upside defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux from Oregon.

Thibodeaux's combination of pure athleticism, speed, and size gives him the potential to be great, and some former Giants stars are already on board. Former Super Bowl legend Osi Umenyiora joined in on the draft pick's praise, saying Thibodeaux reminded him of a certain Giants great.

Umenyiora spoke to the New York Post over the weekend, and had this to say about the No. 5 pick.

“He wouldn’t be anything like JPP, he doesn’t remind me of Kiwi, doesn’t remind me of Tuck, doesn’t remind me of Strahan, actually. He’s more like myself.”

New York is renowned for its lineage of all-time edge rushers. From Michael Strahan to Jason Pierre-Paul, Lawrence Taylor, Justin Tuck and others, the franchise seemingly always has elite defenders rushing the passer. Umenyiora struggled to find the perfect comparison for Thibodeaux until finally landing on himself.

It's good company. Osi won two Super Bowls, made to Pro Bowls and one All-Pro honoree during his nine-year run in the Big Apple. He forced a league-leading 10 fumbles in 2010 and put up 75.0 sacks during his Giants tenure.

Thibodeaux enters his rookie campaign with +550 odds (2nd) to win Defensive Rookie of the Year on FanDuel Sportsbook.
