Desmond Trufant was released by the Atlanta Falcons on Monday morning. He had a down year in 2019, as he allowed a passer rating of 100.9 when targeted in coverage (87.6 in 2018).
Still, he's a former Pro Bowler entering his age-30 season, and he should see plenty of interest on the open market. With that in mind, let's take a look at three teams that need to sign Trufant this offseason.
3. Arizona Cardinals
Thanks to the emergence of Kyler Murray, there's a lot of optimism around the Arizona Cardinals' offense. The same can't be said of the defense, though. The Cardinals finished the regular season as the league's sixth-worst pass defense, according to Football Outsiders' DVOA metrics. With over $30 million in available space, Arizona can afford to take a flyer on a talent like Trufant.
2. Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions finished the regular season as the league's fourth-worst pass defense by DVOA. Unfortunately, that unit could get even worse next season, given all the trade rumors surrounding Darius Slay. Regardless of Slay's status, adding a veteran presence like Trufant could bring some much-needed stability to this unit.
1. New York Giants
With more than $50 million in cap space, the New York Giants have plenty of issues to fix, and the cap space to solve them. The secondary is arguably the most pressing of those needs, as NYG graded out as the league's second-worst pass defense by DVOA. Trufant won't fix that on his own, but he'd be a nice low-risk, high-reward gamble for Big Blue.
