NHL Betting Picks for Wednesday 3/13/24: Avalanche-Canucks Headlines Slate

It's hump day in the NHL, and as per usual, there are just a few games to pick from with the four-game slate.

Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.

Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets

Nashville Predators at Winnipeg Jets

Jets ML (-154)

In a battle between two potential playoff teams, taking the better squad at home feels like the way to go tonight. I like the Winnipeg Jets moneyline for this one.

The Jets have been a dominant team since the very start of the season, leaning on defense and goaltending to solidify themselves as one of the best in the NHL. Taking on a Nashville Predators team that has turned things around can be tough but not so tough to start doubting Winnipeg at home tonight. As we've seen this season, the Jets are one of the best when it comes to playing on their own ice, posting a 22-8-2 record.

Winnipeg doesn't score a ton, as shown by their 3.04 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60), which is identical to their actual goals for per 60 minutes (GF/60). But they keep the puck out of the net thanks to Connor Hellebuyck, totaling the second-best goals against per 60 minutes (GA/60) average in the NHL at a 2.36 clip. They're outperforming their 2.99 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60).

Nashville ranks 14th with 3.15 GF/60, signaling a bit of underperformance with a 3.27 xGF/60 that is top-10 in the league. They're allowing 3.03 GA/60, as well, leaving us to comfortably side with the Jets tonight with the potential to score against Juuse Saros and the Predators.

Roll with the Jets tonight to earn the victory.

Colorado Avalanche at Vancouver Canucks

Over 6.5 Goals (-115)

Two of the best teams in the NHL collide tonight as the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks face off.

These two teams are elite scoring teams and among the best in the NHL. It's the big reason I'd consider betting Over 6.5 Goals in this one.

Breaking down these two teams and how many goals they're averaging a game, they both rank in the top three in the NHL. Colorado leads the league with an average of 3.68 GF/60. The Canucks are third in that respect, coming into tonight with 3.51 GF/60.

I'm more inclined to side with their goalscoring efforts in favor of the defense and goaltending -- especially since both sides are expected to start their backups over their all-star goalies. The Avs are holding opponents to 2.97 GA/60, which ranks 15th in the NHL. That's a total that nearly matches up with their 3.05 xGA/60. With the Canucks, they're ranking fifth with 2.64 GA/60.

The backups for these two teams don't have track records to worry about, and it's why the over is so enticing. Both Justus Annunen and Casey DeSmith will be between the pipes. Annunen has been good in seven starts with a 2.29 goal against average (GAA) and .929 save percentage (SV%) but has career marks of 2.84 and .907. DeSmith, on the other hand, has had it rough with a 2.85 GAA and .900 SV%. He's also just two starts removed from letting up eight goals. These two netminders shouldn't hurt these teams covering tonight.

numberFire's model gives this game a 59.20% likelihood of hitting the over. The -115 odds imply 53.5%.
