NHL Betting: 3 Team Total Points to Target Following All-Star Break

With NHL All-Star Weekend arriving, there's no better time to look at the landscape as we head into the toughest part of the regular season.

Certain teams have been on fire heading into the break while others have left us looking for more. That markets are going to change a lot over the next week as the NHL heads into the final stretch of the 2023-24 season, making this a good time to look at NHL point totals and consider where some teams may end up when it's all said and done.

Let's dive into the three team point totals that stand out the most on FanDuel Sportsbook.

NHL Team Total Points

Detroit Red Wings Over 91.5 Points (-162)

It's hard to not love what the Detroit Red Wings are doing this year. And it's a lot easier to be on their side when the point total for their season is set at just 91.5.

The Red Wings are red-hot right now. Over their last 10 games heading into the break, they're 6-2-2, earning points in 8 of 10 possible games. Those are the numbers you like to see, especially when considering the over on their season total.

On the overall season, the Red Wings have a 26-18-5 record, which is good for 58 points through 50 games. That means that they have 32 games to make up 34 points. Detroit needs to win just over half of their games through the remainder of the season to get above 91.5 points. That's not only believable, but for a team with the postseason on their mind, it's something that they're determined to do.

Had we been asking this question a month ago, the reality would have been far murkier. Thankfully for us and bettors, Alex Lyon has helped shut down their main concerns by keeping the puck out of their own net. While they're still allowing 3.18 Goals Against per 60 minutes on the season, that number has shrunk to 2.51 in the last month.

Assuming that this is more the expectation moving forward, along with their elite goalscoring ability (3.44 Goals For), then it's hard to not love the Red Wings at this spot in their final 32 games of the campaign.

Pittsburgh Penguins Under 93.5 Points (-122)

While Sidney Crosby continues to play at a high level, the Pittsburgh Penguins have failed to meet the same standard.

And we don't expect that to change for the rest of this season.

The Penguins currently sit at 22-17-7, struggling compared to what their expectations were in the offseason after acquiring Erik Karlsson to add even more star power. They have just 51 points in 46 games, giving them 36 games to get to their over/under 93.5 points total.

That'd mean that they need to get 43 points from here on out to get the over on their set total. Pittsburgh having to nearly match their win total through the first part of the season is why anyone should have serious doubts about that happening.

What has hurt the Penguins this season more than anything else is their inability to score. For a team that has offensive weapons like Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, and others, they're averaging only 2.92 Goals For per 60 minutes, good for 20th in the NHL. It looks even worse when they're allowing their opponents to average only 2.62 goals against them every night. These stats would make you think a turnaround is possible, but I've been saying that all season long, and they're still in the land of mediocrity.

Pittsburgh is getting to a point where they may need to be sellers at the trade deadline -- a reality that hasn't existed for the majority of the Crosby era. If they do sell, or settle even, then there's plenty of confidence in them not reaching the 93.5 total from here on out.

It's a bust of a season for the Penguins, who will need to figure out what's next sooner rather than later.

Edmonton Oilers Over 105.5 Points (-128)

The Edmonton Oilers are the hottest team in hockey, and we're riding the wave with them.

Entering the All-Star break, the Oilers have a 16-game winning streak and have looked like the best team in hockey. During the streak, they're scoring 3.78 Goals For per 60 minutes while holding their opponents to a minuscule 1.49 Goals Against per 60 minutes -- unsurprisingly, the best in the NHL during this span.

The emphasis on defense is what has brought the Oilers from a good team that was underperforming to a great one that is back on track. That, of course, is in part due to head coach Kris Knoblauch taking over early on in the season and turning things around. They're 26-6-0 under their new head coach, and it's a trend that can bring them to the 105.5 mark.

Edmonton has played the fewest games out of every team in the NHL heading into the break. Through 45 games played, they have 59 points. The Oilers are going to have to still win a lot in their final 39 games to get to that mark, but going off what they've done under Knoblauch, it's believable that they can do it with ease.

They're not going to stay on this undefeated streak. That's just not possible. But there's a good chance that they can win another 24 games to get over the 105.5 total. It almost feels like if they don't, something really bad has happened to this team.

If they can stick to their defensive style, that's what will bring the Oilers to the over and, potentially, the top of the Pacific Division, as well.
