Pacers vs. Lakers In-Season Tournament Final Analysis

After four games in the group stage and back-to-back elimination games, the Pacers and Lakers have arrived at the final of the first-ever NBA In-Season Tournament.

Neither of these teams were expected to be here. The Lakers rank sixth (+1800) in the current NBA championship odds, per FanDuel Sportsbook, while the Pacers rank 18th (+12000).

Both sides arrive at the final stage undefeated in tournament play, going a perfect 4-0 in the group stages before their victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

After winning their group, which included the Phoenix Suns, the Lakers defeated Phoenix again and then dominated the New Orleans Pelicans to reach the final. As good as Los Angeles has been, the real story of the tournament has been the Pacers.

Led by Haliburton's elite play, Indiana won its group, which included the Philadelphia 76ers, and then pulled off back-to-back upset victories over the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks -- two of the NBA's elite -- to reach the final. Indiana's path to this point took them through three of the top four teams in the East, and they have not faltered.

This sets up an exciting final between a legend in James and a rising superstar in Haliburton.

It will be a battle of contrasting styles. Both teams like to play fast -- Indiana ranks first in pace while the Lakers rank 10th -- but that is where the similarities end.

The Pacers have the best adjusted offense rating (aORTG) in the NBA and the worst adjusted defensive rating (aDRTG). The Lakers rank 19th in aORTG but 6th in aDRTG. It's not quite unstoppable force meets an immovable object, but it's certainly close.

The Lakers enter as 4.0-point favorites, but that surely means little to a Pacers side that has pulled off larger upsets already this tournament.
