Jaguars vs. Colts Week 1: Storylines to Follow

  • Jaguars
    • Calvin Ridley's Jaguars debut
      • Calvin Ridley was reinstated in March after serving a one-year suspension for betting on NFL games. The Jaguars acquired Ridley last November in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons. What level of play Ridley brings to Jacksonville will have a tremendous impact on their season. If Ridley performs at the level he did in 2020, when he caught 90 of 143 targets for 1,374 yards and 9 touchdowns, he could quickly ascend to the top of the Jaguars' pass-catching group and help take the offense to another level. Week 1 will be Ridley's first game since October of 2021.
    • How will the Jaguars' backfield look with Tank Bigsby?
      • After sitting out his entire rookie season with a foot injury, Travis Etienne was excellent for the Jaguars last season. He turned 220 rush attempts into 1,125 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns, with 35 receptions on 45 targets for 316 receiving yards. Early in the season, Jacksonville attempted a platoon approach with James Robinson before eventually trading him to the New York Jets. During the draft, they used their third-round draft pick on running back Tank Bigsby. Jacksonville could utilize Bigsby when Etienne needs a breather, or they could have their eyes set on a true split between the two. Week 1 will provide the first glimpse of the Jaguars' plans for their ground game this season.
  • Colts
    • Anthony Richardson's Colts debut
      • After years of trying and failing to address the quarterback position by signing veteran signal callers, the Colts finally hit reset this offseason. Indianapolis selected Anthony Richardson with the fourth overall pick. In doing so they have decided to focus on rebuilding with a young prospect at quarterback for the first time since Andrew Luck retired in 2019. Entering the season, Gardner Minshew will provide competition for Richardson in training camp. There is a chance Richardson's debut comes later than Week 1, but assuming a best-case scenario, he will be under center when the Colts start their season at home against Jacksonville.
    • The health of Jonathan Taylor
      • Jonathan Taylor began his career with back-to-back 1,000-rushing-yard seasons. He performed at an elite level during the 2021 season, turning 332 rush attempts into 1,811 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns, with 40 receptions on 51 targets for 360 receiving yards and 2 receiving touchdowns. He was on his way to meeting the sky-high expectations he had as a prospect entering the NFL until an ankle injury derailed his 2022 season, limiting him to 11 games. After offseason surgery in January, Taylor was still sidelined for the start of OTAs in May. He plans to be fully healthy for the start of training camp. Assuming he is, Week 1's clash with Jacksonville will be the first time Taylor has been fully healthy for an NFL game since October 2nd.
