It's been five long seasons since the Denver Broncos made the playoffs and the organization is hoping to turn that around soon. They'll look to start that process at the 2021 NFL Draft as they'll be on the clock with the No. 9 pick.

The Broncos have to be careful with who they take ninth overall. While the right prospect could help turn them back into winners, the wrong one might leave them in limbo for another couple of seasons. Keeping that in mind, here are three players the Broncos should avoid with the No. 9 pick.

1. Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama

The Denver Broncos needed some cornerback depth at the start of the offseason, and they addressed that by signing Kyle Fuller and Ronald Darby. While Patrick Surtain II looks like he could be a great NFL player, the Broncos aren't in the position where they can afford to draft the best player available unless it's a quarterback. There's other positions of real need for them to address, so they should instead try to target a cornerback in a later round.

2. Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State

With the Broncos needing a quarterback, there's a chance that they could wind up drafting North Dakota State's Trey Lance. Experts often have him in their top five or six quarterbacks in the draft, but the Broncos may want to stay away. Lance only started in 17 game collegiate games, meaning we really haven't seen that much of him. He's also used to playing in a run-first offense and while that works at the college level, NFL teams might be quick to figure him out. If there's a chance at one of the other top QBs the Broncos should move up to get them instead of settling for Lance.

3. Jayson Oweh, EDGE, Penn State

At No. 9, the Broncos may consider improving their defense. With the EDGE position being another play they could improve on, Jayson Oweh could be somebody that they're looking at. While the 6-foot-5, 252-pound edge-rusher could become an impact player one day, he's too much of a project for the Broncos to risk the ninth overall pick on. He didn't record a single sack in 2020, leading to criticism over him being too passive. Maybe one day Oweh will reach his full potential, but the Broncos can't afford to wait that long.
