Jose Berrios Trade Rumors: Twins' Asking Price Revealed Ahead of Deadline

With a 40-54 record, the Minnesota Twins will likely be one of the many teams selling next week at the July 30 MLB trade deadline. One of the more interesting pieces that they could move is two-time all-star starting pitcher Jose Berrios. He's slated to become a free agent at the end of the season, meaning possible World Series contenders could think of him as a rental that could put them over the top.
The Athletic's Dan Hayes revealed on Friday that the Twins asking price in a potential Berrios trade is "a pre-arb player and two top-100 prospects." Needless to say, that's definitely a steep price for the impending free agent.

Jose Berrios Trade Rumors
One thing about Berrios' situation is that even though he'll be a free agent, he's still eligible for arbitration for one more year. That means that any team looking to acquire him would have at least one more season of control over him.
One team that could wind up paying that price happens to be the New York Mets. Injuries have landed three of their starting pitchers on the injured list and Sports Illustrated's Pat Ragzzo reported that Berrios is someone that the Mets are considering at the deadline. New York has four top-100 prospects in their system and also has a handful of players who are eligible for arbitration in 2022 and beyond, so there could possibly be a deal there.

After a shaky rookie season back in 2016, Berrios has been nothing but consistent for the Twins — including this season. He's 7-4 through 19 starts in 2021, pitching to a 3.69 ERA while also recording career-bests in hits per 9 innings pitched (7.2) and WHIP (1.081). Assuming that he can continue that throughout the season, there's no reason why Berrios can't be an important piece of a World Series contender.
