Antonio Gibson had a monstrous season as a rookie in 2020. The 23-year-old RB racked up 1,042 yards from scrimmage and 11 touchdowns for the Washington Football Team. He did so despite losing a good amount of work to Peyton Barber.

However, Barber was just released today. That should have a big impact on Gibson's fantasy outlook.

Barber was something of a thorn in the side of Gibson managers last year. He had five games with 10-plus carries last year. That includes Week 1, when Washington let him handle the rock 17 times for 29 yards and 2 touchdowns. Gibson, meanwhile, was limited to just 9 carries in that game.

Washington obviously figured things out the rest of the way, though.

Gibson saw 161 carries to 77 for Barber the rest of the way. The Memphis product could see an even larger share of the early-down work than he did last year with Barber now out of the picture.

Jarret Patterson could steal some early-down touches, and the passing-down work will go to JD McKissic, but this looks like Gibson's backfield, for the most part.

He currently checks in as the RB11 in our 2021 PPR fantasy football rankings.
