Will the Dodgers Run Away With the NL West?

Subscribe to our newsletter

The 2024 MLB season will be here before you know it -- pitchers and catchers have already reported for spring training.

With the NFL season wrapped up and the NBA season heading into its All-Star break, now is a great time to get up to speed on some of the MLB odds at FanDuel Sportsbook. With that in mind, let's take a look at the NL West odds for this year.

All MLB odds via FanDuel Sportsbook.

Arizona Diamondbacks84-78+1000
San Diego Padres82-80+1300
San Francisco Giants79-83+1500
Colorado Rockies59-103+20000

Unlike other groupings around Major League Baseball, the NL West is projected to offer almost no competition for the divisional crown. Understandably so, the Los Angeles Dodgers -- after acquiring several new superstars in various areas -- are currently listed at overwhelming -600 odds to win the NL West in 2024. For transparency, they are the biggest division favorite in the sport.

Behind Los Angeles, we see the very team that knocked them out of the most recent postseason: the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-backs, on the heels of a World Series run, have proven to be one of MLB's most explosive teams. After those two sides, the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants sit neck-and-neck on the divisional odds board.

Naturally, the Colorado Rockies are a cellar dweller in this market -- FanDuel Sportsbook has Denver's MLB team labeled with 200-to-1 odds to win the NL West.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-600)

Given the Dodgers' many moves over the offseason, they are not only the favorite to earn the divisional crown but also the current title favorite, listed with +320 odds to win the World Series, per FanDuel Sportsbook's World Series odds. Most notably, two-way star Shohei Ohtani will come up Interstate 5 to play his home games now, leaving the Los Angeles Angels and Orange County behind.

"The Boys in Blue" also did well to add Japanese pitching sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto along with dynamic outfielder Teoscar Hernandez. Fan-favorite Clayton Kershaw will also be back in Los Angeles. Simply, a team that won 100 games in 2023 will return largely improved.

Lest we forget, the Dodgers still have Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman in the lineup. Up at Chavez Ravine, they seem to have constructed their own "Murderer's Row" on par with the New York Yankees of the late 1920s.

Heading into 2024, the Dodgers have the highest set win total by FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB win totals -- a lofty 103.5 games (-115/-105). As always, expectations will be aggressive in the Southland, and a division title this season will make for three in the past four years.

Arizona Diamondbacks (+1000)

The Diamondbacks have not won the NL West since 2011, but they did well last year to win the recent National League pennant as a Wild Card team. For the coming campaign, Arizona has 18-to-1 odds to repeat as NL champs -- per FanDuel Sportsbook's National League odds -- while showing a payback of 10-to-1 to take the division.

Built around a young and dynamic core, the D-backs will be a solid side once again in 2024. After winning NL Rookie of the Year last season, speedy outfielder Corbin Carroll will be on 30-30 watch. Turning 24 this year, Carroll has already stolen as many as 54 bases in a season, and he will likely improve on his previous home-run total of 25.

In the starting-pitching rotation, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly are a solid one-two punch. From there, the Diamondbacks have quality players up the middle. Switch-hitting second baseman Ketel Marte is coming off a brilliant year in which he showcased the third-best OPS (.844) of his career. In the squat, catcher Gabriel Moreno provided durability last season, earning his first Gold Glove.

With gained wisdom, the D-backs have high hopes for 2024. Arizona also added pop and experience via veteran Joc Pederson. As a left-handed batter, Pederson will mostly fill-in exclusively at designated hitter. Can the two-time champion serve as a shot in the arm for the Snakes?

San Diego Padres (+1300)

As the tenant of (arguably) MLB's prettiest venue, the Padres are holding onto a few cards while sending others back to the dealer.

Notably, San Diego will be without last season's skipper, Bob Melvin (who is now leading the division-rival Giants). From there, superstar Juan Soto has also departed; the slugging lefty was shipped to the Bronx. However, other than a picturesque ballpark, there is plenty to be excited for in S.D.

The Friars still employ the talents of many studs who can hit and field at a high level. Third baseman Manny Machado possesses one of the smoothest right-handed swings in baseball while Fernando Tatis Jr. is a certified five-tool player. Be that as it may, can San Diego finally put it all together?

Mike Shildt will step in as manager for the Padres in 2024. Shildt most recently worked as skipper for the St. Louis Cardinals, earning one NL Central title for the Red Birds through three and a half years at post. In that time, Shildt and St. Louis compiled a 252-199 (.559) record.

San Francisco Giants (+1500)

On the shores of McCovey Cove, the Giants have slowly but surely made improvements since last season ended. However, there is a fair chance that they are still only the third or fourth best ball club in California. numberFire currently has San Francisco (-0.50 nERD) ranked 19th in the Majors, which is obviously worse than Los Angeles or San Diego.

As mentioned, Bob Melvin will return home and begin his Giants managerial tenure; Gabe Kapler was fired over last season's final week. Next, San Francisco has added talent in the outfield with the likes of Jorge Soler and Jung Hoo Lee.

There are also notable names returning to the "City by the Bay." Logan Webb is one of the most durable right-handed arms in the Bigs. On the receiving end, young catcher Patrick Bailey has extremely high potential. Additionally, Bailey can switch-hit, which is a rare trait among major-league backstops.

After falling below .500 by end of 2023, the Giants have 15-to-1 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook to earn the NL West crown for 2024. Outside of the archrival Dodgers, San Francisco is the only team to win this grouping in the current decade.

Colorado Rockies (+20000)

Baseball has not gone well in the "Mile High" as of late. Dating back to 2019, the Rockies have finished exactly zero regular seasons with a winning record.

Transparently, Colorado has sunken to new lows on the diamond. Last year, the "Blake Street Bombers" recorded a whopping 103 losses, which is now the worst mark in franchise history. Unfortunately, the situation does not appear to be improving -- the Rockies (-1.96) are dead last in numberFire's MLB power rankings.

Because of Coors Field's lofty elevation (5,280 feet), Colorado will always naturally have a tough time keeping opposing run totals down. However, they cannot stand for allowing 900 or more runs every season. In 2023, the Rox surrendered 957 runs, the most in baseball by a wide margin.

Colorado just had legendary first baseman Todd Helton inducted into the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame, but that is about all the franchise has going for them at this moment. Still, the most prevalent baseball question in Denver is what happens with Kris Bryant in 2024? The former star hasn't been able to stay healthy since coming to Colorado.
