NHL Single-Game Betting Picks for Friday 3/29/24: Devils at Sabres

The New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres will face off in the only game on tonight's NHL slate.

Whether it's moneylines or total goals, there are plenty of ways to bet on the NHL action all season. It's a long 82-game campaign, meaning that the best selections of each night can be very different based on backup goalies coming into play, injuries that add up, and if teams are due for positive or negative swings.

Let's dive into the best bets for tonight.

NHL Best Bets

New Jersey Devils at Buffalo Sabres

Over 6.5 Goals (-118)

The Devils and Sabres have both seriously underperformed this season but still have the talent to hit Over 6.5 Goals on the night.

New Jersey will likely control the pace of this game. That tends to mean goals are going to be scored often. Despite falling short for much of this season, the Devils rank 10th in the league with 3.28 goals for per 60 minutes (GF/60). They're actually a little unlucky, as well, as they have a mark of 3.34 expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) -- placing fifth in the NHL.

The Sabres have struggled to score at times this season (2.94 GF/60), but they've been better in their last 10 games with 3.27 GF/60 in that time.

Buffalo has a good chance to stay hot today given how rough it's been for the Devils to keep things out of their own net. No matter who has been goal, there's been few answers for the Devils. They're allowing 3.34 goals against per 60 minutes (GA/60), which ranks 27th.

Buffalo hasn't been as bad defensively with 3.00 GA/60, but they are bottom 10 with 3.19 expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). That works in our favor tonight.

Jake Allen and Devon Levi are going to be between the pipes for each team. Allen has allowed eight goals over his last two games. He's got a 3.39 goals against average (GAA) and .900 save percentage (SV%) on the season. Levi, on the other hand, hasn't been much better in his backup role. The 22-year-old is sporting a 3.16 GAA and .898 SV% through 22 games.

If we're going to count on anything with these two teams tonight, it's can be scoring. numberFire's model backs that up as it projects there to be 6.84 goals in this one and gives the over a 55.4% chance to hit. The implied odds at this -118 line are 54.1%.
