Gonzaga vs. Kansas Best Bet

Gonzaga Moneyline (-182)

The Kansas Jayhawks didn't put on a great showing in the Round of 64.

After a late-game controversial foul call that favored Kansas, the Jayhawks scraped past a 13 seed Samford team with a 93-89 win.

This game came down to the wire despite the Jayhawks shooting a stellar 60.3% from the field.

I don't think they'll have as much luck against the Gonzaga Bulldogs this Saturday.

Though coming in favored by just 5.5 points, Gonzaga skated by McNeese with an 86-65 victory. They now enter as the favorite against Kansas, and I'm more than willing to back them.

For starters, Gonzaga ranks higher than Kansas on every relevant model, including numberFire, Bart Torvik, and KenPom. Their 42nd-best defense holds opponents to the 25th-lowest effective field goal percentage, so we can't trust the Jayhawks to shoot at an above-average clip once again.

Earlier this week, Kevin McCullar Jr. was ruled out for the NCAA Tournament. McCullar led the way for Kansas this season, averaging 18.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Look for his absence to be felt in this one. Losing your leading scorer is hard enough, but losing your leading scorer against a top-50 defense that has won 10 of their last 11 games is a whole different headache.

And though Kansas eventually persevered on Thursday night, they had lost four of their last five games without McCullar.

Gonzaga's eighth-best offense features four players who average at least 12.8 points per game. The team turns over the ball at the 18th-lowest rate and grabs offensive boards at the 46th-highest rate. Kansas, meanwhile, ranks 158th in turnover percentage and 291st in offensive rebound percentage.

The Bulldogs come in with a higher-ranked, more well-rounded program that has been on fire as of late. Add in that they seem primed to keep possessions alive and capitalize on second-chance points, and they look ready to make a deep run in the Midwest Region.
