NBA Best Bets
Charlotte Hornets at Miami Heat
Over 223.5 (-110)
Following Monday's matchup between these two, the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat are meeting once again. In that one, Miami came out with the 116-114 win while the over hit. The over trend could continue as it is 5-2 over the previous seven head-to-head matchups when Miami and Charlotte tangle.
The Heat are still without their top two scorers in Tyler Herro (22.9 points per game [PPG]) and Bam Adebayo (22.3 PPG), but they found success on Monday against Charlotte. The three-ball was a big factor as Miami converted 15 of 35 attempts (42.9%). Duncan Robinson (five threes) and Kevin Love (four) led the three-point barrage.
The Hornets have the second-worst defensive rating in the league; the Heat are poised for another good scoring night despite missing Bam and Herro. They could certainly replicate their three-point success as Charlotte gives up the 11th-most three-point attempts per game.
Jimmy Butler, who shoots 77.1% of his attempts within 14 feet of the basket, had a good game in Monday's clash with 23 points and a 58.3% field goal percentage (FG%). Charlotte gives up the fifth-most points in the paint per game, giving Butler the stage to shine.
Without Adebayo in the lineup, Miami is missing their primary paint defender. On the season, the Heat allow the 14th-fewest points in the paint per game, but this could increase with Bam out of the fold.
This also bodes well for the Hornets, who generate the sixth-most points in the paint per game. Gordon Hayward (15.3 PPG) is a player to watch as he consistently attacks the painted area, with 42.4% of his attempts coming from within 10 feet of the basket.
The over is 4-2 in the last six Heat games and 4-1 in the last five Hornets contests. Both offenses have potential advantages going into Wednesday's matchup. Give me the over.
Memphis Grizzlies at Houston Rockets
Rockets -6.0 (-112)
The Houston Rockets have been a bettor's best friend, going 14-5-1 against the spread (ATS). They've been even better at home, notching an 8-1-1 record ATS. Houston's also hot right now with three consecutive wins and covers. Wednesday could be the perfect opportunity for another cover with the 6-16 Memphis Grizzlies visiting town.
First off, Houston has the second-best defensive rating in the Association while Memphis has the third-worst offensive rating. The Rockets give up only 105.6 PPG (fewest) and opponents have a 50.0% effective field goal percentage (eFG%), which is the second-lowest mark. Scoring could be a laborious task for the Grizzlies, a team that totals only 106.5 PPG (second-worst) on a 50.8 eFG% (second-worst).
Even though they have the third-worst three-point shooting percentage in the NBA, Memphis attempts the sixth-most threes per game. Defending shots from beyond the arc is yet another strength for Houston as the Rockets give up the third-fewest made three-pointers per night.
Despite their struggles, the Grizzlies still feature a solid defense, owning the 11th-best rating while giving up the fewest points in the paint per game. Jaren Jackson Jr. has continued to dominate inside with a 111.7 defensive rating and 1.8 blocks per game. However, the Grizzlies' perimeter defense is susceptible as Memphis allowing the eighth-most three-point attempts per game.
This could be a big game for the Rockets' guards. Fred VanVleet (16.7 PPG) and Jalen Green (18.5 PPG) lead the team in three-point attempts.
Ultimately, Memphis could struggle to score. I'm rolling with Houston to stay hot at home with another cover.
