NBA Best Bets
Minnesota Timberwolves at Atlanta Hawks
Hawks Moneyline (+116)
The Atlanta Hawks got off to a dreadful 0-2 start, averaging 115 points per game (PPG) while shooting 45.0% from the field and an alarming 27.9% on three-pointers.
Atlanta's offense finally showed signs of life in Sunday's 127-110 win over the Milwaukee Bucks with a 50.5 field goal percentage (FG%) while drilling 40.5% shots from deep.
Trae Young's struggles have continued, though, as he has a 26.5 FG% through three games. Fortunately, his teammates have stepped up to the plate. De'Andre Hunter (17.0 PPG) and Jalen Johnson (15.3 PPG) have been a formidable forward duo, which transitions into Monday's matchup.
The Minnesota Timberwolves, who are off to a 1-1 start, are the visitors for tonight's collision. The T-Wolves' two-way stud Jaden McDaniels is questionable with a calf strain. If McDaniels cannot go, this presents an excellent opportunity for Hunter and Johnson to feast yet again.
Minnesota's defense has been dominant, even with McDaniels yet to make his season debut. They rank second in defensive rating and fifth in opponent FG%. However, the Wolves' perimeter defense has been somewhat vulnerable (16th in opponent three-point percentage), which is likely a by-product of McDaniels' absence.
Atlanta's Hunter has shot 5 of 11 (45.5%) on three-pointers in his last two games, and Johnson cashed in 2 of 3 looks from beyond the arc on Sunday. Bogdan Bogdanovic shot 8 of 16 (50.0%) from three in his previous two outings, and even Young was 3 of 8 from deep in Sunday's win.
The Hawks are beginning to heat up from three. With the Timberwolves' perimeter defense potentially vulnerable with McDaniels' status up in the air, I love Atlanta as the underdog.
FanDuel is offering $150 in bonus bets if a new user hits their first moneyline wager of at least $5. Backing the Hawks could be one of the best NBA moneyline picks of the night.
Detroit Pistons at Oklahoma City Thunder
Pistons +6 (-110)
This Detroit Pistons-Oklahoma City Thunder matchup looks like one of the most intriguing clashes for tonight. Both teams sit at 2-1, featuring rosters brimming with young talent.
The Thunder were humbled on Sunday with a 128-95 loss against the defending world champions, the Denver Nuggets. The Pistons, on the other hand, are riding a two-game winning streak with an average win margin of 14 points. With Detroit 3-0 against the spread (ATS), give me the underdog to cover.
The Pistons' advantage on the boards could cause problems for OKC. Detroit ranks third in defensive and offensive rebounds per game and first in offensive rebounding percentage. Jalen Duren has spearheaded the attack on the glass with a league-best 15.3 rebounds per game (RPG).
Chet Holmgren (7.0 RPG) has helped improve the Thunder's defensive rebounding; they rank 14th in defensive rebounding percentage compared to 29th in the 2022-23 season. However, Oklahoma City is still 30th in offensive rebounding percentage.
The difference in shot attempts could keep Detroit within striking distance, perhaps even leading to a win. You don't want to give the Pistons extra chances as they are ninth in FG%.
With the projected total at 225.5, the under could be a good choice for a same game parlay. Both teams rank within the top half of the slowest paces in the Association.
Chicago Bulls at Indiana Pacers
Pacers -3.5 (-108)
After generating playoff hype in the offseason, the Indiana Pacers have lived up to expectations with a 2-0 start and average win margin of 17.5 points. Indiana is now -106 to earn a postseason berth.
The Pacers will look to extend their two-game winning streak tonight against the Chicago Bulls. This will be a clash of contrasting styles, as Indiana has the third-fastest pace in the NBA, while Chicago holds the third-slowest pace.
The Bulls have the ninth-worst defensive rating (114.2), and the Pacers boast the top offensive rating in basketball (128.2). This alone spells trouble for Chicago. FanDuel Sportsbook's NBA lines have Indiana as 3.5-point favorites (-108) with most of the money coming in on the Bulls.
After finishing fifth in FiveThirtyEight's offensive RAPTOR last season, Tyrese Haliburton has not missed a beat with 20.5 PPG and a league-best 12.0 assists per game (APG). Plus, he has three scorers -- Aaron Nesmith, Jalen Smith, and Buddy Hield -- touting offensive ratings of over 143.0.
Chicago's Zach LaVine is holding a career-worst 118.3 defensive rating, and Coby White is carrying a career-worst 119.2 defensive rating.
Ultimately, Indiana's red-hot offense could be too much for the Bulls to handle.
