Houston Astros at Tampa Bay Rays
Rays Moneyline (+108)
Taj Bradley Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-104)
Brandon Lowe to Record a Run (-105)
Combined Odds: +450
The Tampa Bay Rays are in an intriguing spot as home underdogs against the Houston Astros. Though Houston has won five straight coming in, Tampa has the bats to end their win streak.
Framber Valdez will make his first start since falling one out short of a no-hitter last week. He's been rolling of late, pitching to a 2.41 ERA with a 32% strikeout rate over his last five starts. But he's still at a 3.66 SIERA for the season, while his 47% hard-hit rate allowed is his highest since 2020.
The Rays, meanwhile, have the league's seventh best wRC+ (117) and ninth best OPS (.754) against lefties. They took two of three from the 'Stros in Houston earlier this month, so it's hard to pass them up as home underdogs tonight.
numberFire's MLB model gives the Rays a 52% chance to win tonight -- up from their 48.1% implied win probability at +108 moneyline odds.
If the Rays are going to upset the Astros tonight, Taj Bradley is going to need to get back on track. Though he's given up nine runs and picked up a pair of losses in his last two starts, the righty still has a 3.07 ERA for the year.
With a 28.7% strikeout rate, we can look to jump on Bradley's discounted number in anticipation of a bounce-back. He still generated 20 whiffs between his last two outings, so I'm bullish on his chances of going over 5.5 strikeouts tonight. He's gone over that total in 11 of 16 starts for the season.
Houston does have the league's third-lowest strikeout rate (19.1%) against righties, but they've been more whiff-happy since the All-Star break. Over their last 21 games, the Astros have a 20.6% strikeout rate against RHP and the 12th-highest whiff rate (11.6%) overall.
The Rays have been one of the league's best offenses against left-handed pitchers, and Brandon Lowe has played a big part of that. It's a small sample, but Lowe has a .439 wOBA and 194 wRC+ versus southpaws.
In general, the second baseman has been a capable No. 2 hitter for Tampa Bay this season. His .853 OPS is his highest since 2021, and he's barreling the ball at the second-highest rate (15.1%) of his career.
Lowe has been rolling in the second half, too. He ranks third on the Rays with a .391 wOBA since the All-Star break and leads them with 11 runs scored in his last 20 games.
New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox
Luis Gil Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-106)
Yankees Over 5.5 Total Runs (-130)
Juan Soto to Record an RBI (+110)
Combined Odds: +457
The New York Yankees are in the windy city to take on the Chicago White Sox tonight. That bodes well for Luis Gil's chances of going over 6.5 strikeouts.
Gil enters tonight with a 12-5 record, 3.06 ERA, and 28.5% strikeout rate. Though he's not been as dominant of late as he was to open the season, the righty has still picked up at least seven strikeouts in three of his last five outings.
He has a good shot to do so again versus a putrid White Sox lineup. For the season, Chicago's south siders have baseball's seventh highest swinging-strike rate (11.8%) and eighth highest strikeout rate (24.2%). That strikeout rate has jumped to 26.7% since the All-Star break, putting Gil in a lovely spot to rack up whiffs tonight.
On the opposite side of the plate, I'm just as bullish on the Yankees offense as I am on their pitching tonight. With lefty Ky Bush throwing for the Sox, New York's well-positioned to score over 5.5 runs.
The 24-year-old Bush has only made one career start, and it didn't impress. Across four innings against the Oakland Athletics, Bush gave up three runs and five walks, striking out three. Considering his lackluster 6.16 ERA and 11.8% walk rate at Triple-A, I'm not optimistic he turns things around against a Yankees roster that ranks 13th in wRC+ (106) and leads the league in walk rate (11.9%) versus left-handed pitchers.
New York has been even better against that split since the All-Star break, jumping to 12th in wRC+ (119) while sneaking into the top 10 in ISO (.197). They've averaged 6.0 runs per game over that stretch, fourth-most in the bigs. They've gone over 5.5 runs 11 times in those 21 games.
Finally, if we like the New York offense to light it up tonight, it makes sense to target one of their two best hitters for prop. Projected for a slate-high 1.13 RBI according to our MLB projections, I'll jump at the oppurtunity to add Juan Soto to record an RBI at +110 odds.
Soto ranks ninth in the majors with 82 RBI for the season, and he's racked up five in nine games already this month. The lefty has consistently mashed in same-handed matchups this season, sporting a .423 wOBA, 180 wRC+, and .273 ISO against lefties.
He'll have a chance to drive in Alex Verdugo (.278 wOBA vs. LHP), DJ LeMahieu (.201), or Anthony Volpe (.287) to cash this leg of the SGP. But even if none of them get on for him, we project Soto for the most home runs tonight, giving this leg a few different ways to hit.
Toronto Blue Jays at Los Angeles Angels
Over 9 Total Runs (-115)
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to Record an RBI (+115)
Zach Neto to Record 2+ Total Bases (+110)
Combined Odds: +452
Tonight's Toronto Blue Jays-Los Angeles Angels bout is tied for the night's highest over/under (9.0 runs), but the pitching matchup suggests this total isn't high enough.
Though Blue Jays righty Bowden Francis hasn't let up more than three runs since early June, he's hardly pitched like an ace and isn't someone we should shy away from. For the season, Bowden has a 5.44 ERA and 4.27 SIERA to go along with a 11.6% barrel rate allowed.
L.A.'s Davis Daniel hasn't been any better. The rookie righty has given up at least four runs in three of five starts this season, allowing a 9.9% barrel rate and 39.5% hard-hit rate.
Neither offense has been especially fearsome against right-handed pitching, but that hasn't stopped either from putting up runs since the All-Star break. Over the last month, the Angels are 14th (4.4) and the Blue Jays are 18th (4.3) in runs per game.
Part of why I'm into the over in this game is Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. Vlad Jr. has been on a heater since the All-Star break, leading the league in wOBA (.598) and wRC+ (301). He's tied for fourth in RBI (21) over his last 22 games, and that's an avenue we can look to target tonight.
On the opposite side, I'm interested in backing Zach Neto to record multiple total bases. He's been nearly as hot as Guerrero since the calendar flipped to August, ranking ninth in both wOBA (.511) and hard-hit rate (62.1%) over the last 10 games.
He's racked up 2+ total bases in five of his last eight games -- a mark he could reach again tonight in a plus matchup.
