MLB Betting: The AL East Is a Heavyweight Cage Match

Subscribe to our newsletter

The AL East has been MLB's cream of the crop division in 2023. At the All-Star break, the AL East is the only division with all five teams showing records above .500.

At the top, the Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the strongest teams in baseball all year long. Notably, their 2023 season started with 13 consecutive wins right out of the gates.

Behind the Rays are the youthful Baltimore Orioles. The O's are showcasing an impressive franchise turnaround. At 54-35, Baltimore has the best record of any second-place team in baseball.

From there, the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox are all tightly condensed at the bottom of the AL East. The Bo-Sox will likely bow out of the race, but the Jays and Yanks both feature more than enough talent to challenge for the division.

Let's have a look through the AL East standings at the All-Star break with an eye on the division winner market.

1. Tampa Bay Rays -300

As noted, the Rays took Major League Baseball by storm when they won their first 13 games of this season. Since then, they have produced a consistent brand of winning baseball.

On the mound, Tampa has been led by a two-headed monster: starters Shane McClanahan and Zach Eflin. McClanahan has been truly masterful in 2023, recording an ERA of 2.53 (second-best in MLB). According to the AL Cy Young odds, McClanahan is +800 to win the award, making him the fourth favorite.

The Rays have also been really good in the batter's box this season. Behind only the Texas Rangers, Tampa has the second-best team OPS in the American League (.783). The Rays have seven players with double-digit home runs, including four individuals with 15 or more long balls: Randy Arozarena, Isaac Paredes, Jose Siri, and Luke Raley.

Additionally, Tampa loves to run. They have 111 stolen bases in 2023, which is more than 20 better than the next American League team.

All in all, the Rays are certainly a deserving favorite in the AL East. But with their lead down to 2.0 games, -300 is a steep number.

2. Baltimore Orioles +550

Just two seasons ago, the Orioles found themselves as a laughingstock of the league. They won only 52 games throughout all of 2021. In 2023, their 54 wins at the All-Star break have already eclipsed that total. Eerily similar to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the O's have gone from league cellar to legit contender seemingly overnight.

Baltimore has the luxury of having their cornerstone player at catcher --Adley Rutschman. The manner in which the two-way star jolted life into the O's reminds me of Buster Posey's arrival to the San Francisco Giants.

Alongside Rutschman, outfielders Anthony Santander and Austin Hays are having fabulous seasons. Santander leads the ballclub in homers (16) and RBI (50) while Hays is sporting Baltimore's best OPS at .853.

Only two games behind Tampa Bay, the Orioles' +550 odds are pretty enticing.

3. Toronto Blue Jays +1100

The Blue Jays arguably have the best overall infield in baseball. From left to right, there is Matt Chapman, Bo Bichette, Whit Merrifield and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.. All mentioned names are good at the plate and with the leather.

As a team, Toronto ranks middle of the pack in most offensive metrics. However, their pitching has collectively amassed the third-most strikeouts (867) in the American League. Of course, that includes a struggling Alek Manoah. His skill-interactive ERA (SIERA) is at a career-worst 5.61, but he's showing signs of life, giving up just one run in six innings last time out.

Toronto has plenty of big names; they have even gotten George Springer back into the swing of things lately. Toronto went into the All-Star break winning five of their final six games. Can they build off their momentum in the second half?

4. New York Yankees +950

The Bronx Bombers are one of those organizations that expect to win the division (and World Series) just about every season. Still, the Yankees are amidst their second-longest World Series drought of all-time, failing to win a world title since 2009.

No need to think about the Fall Classic just yet, though -- New York will have a tall enough task coming back for the AL East crown in 2023. The reigning AL MVP, Aaron Judge, has missed significant time this season with a toe injury. Anthony Rizzo has been solid (.753 OPS), but given Judge's absence, more is desired from a left-handed power hitter who plays at Yankee Stadium.

Right now, New York has the fifth-worst OBP in the majors (.300). Judge should be back in the second half to help elevate some of their lowly offensive figures, but as it is now (8.0 games behind Tampa), the Yankees are true longshots to come back and win the AL East.

Worth mentioning, New York hurler Gerrit Cole currently has the second-shortest odds (+300) to win the 2023 AL Cy Young.

5. Boston Red Sox +8000

In the broad scope of things, Boston is not a bad team. They actually have the second-best OPS (.759) in the AL East despite sitting in last place.

The Red Sox are 9.0 games out with the entire second half left to play. I don't love their chances to win the division, but at +8000, they have the shortest odds to win the division of all last-place teams in the AL. Cue "Sweet Caroline!"

Compare Boston's odds to the Yankees' odds. The Yanks are only one game better in the standings but have much, much shorter odds to win the AL East.
