Celtics vs. Heat Game 2 Analysis
One game after their 24-point victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 7 on Sunday, the Celtics' familiar home struggles returned in Game 1. After a back-and-forth first half, Boston closed the second quarter strong to take a seven-point lead into halftime.
That was the end of the good news for the Celtics in Game 1.
The Heat won the third quarter 46-25 and held off the Celtics down the stretch to steal homecourt advantage away from Boston.
The Heat are now 3-0 in Game 1s this postseason, with all of their wins coming on the road. Despite opening every series at home, Boston is 1-2 in Game 1s this postseason, with their lone win coming against the Atlanta Hawks.
Up seven at the half, the Celtics suffered a defensive collapse in the third quarter, allowing the Heat to score 46 points on 65.4% shooting from the field and 66.7% shooting from three.
Boston won the fourth quarter by five points but was never able to get within three points of the lead, falling apart down the stretch with just seven points in the final five minutes.
Overall, the Heat shot 54.1% from the field and 51.6% from behind the arc. Boston shot 51.9% from the field and 34.5% from three and made just 22 of 29 free throws (75.9%).
A Miami offense that was slowed down by the New York Knicks last round returned to the form it displayed in the first-round series against the Milwaukee Bucks. Their 123 points were the most conceded by Boston at home during these playoffs, 16 points above the Celtics' average this postseason (107.0).
Coming off his 51-point performance to close out the 76ers on Sunday, Jayson Tatum posted a -10 plus/minus, second-worst on the Celtics behind only Robert Williams (-14). Tatum scored 30 points on 9-17 (52.9%) shooting from the field but made just one of his three attempts from behind the arc. After making 6 of 10 attempts in Game 7, Tatum's 3 attempts in Game 1 tied a playoff low. In the fourth quarter, he didn't attempt a single three-pointer and recorded six points (all from free throws), one rebound, no assists, and three turnovers.
For Miami, Bam Adebayo was dominant. His +18 plus/minus led all players in Game 1 and he finished with 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists in 37 minutes on the court.
The good news for Boston is they have been here before. They are 2-0 in Game 2s this postseason with an average margin of victory of 23.5 points. Coming off a loss this postseason, they are 4-1 with an average margin of victory of 9.4 points. Losing homecourt advantage means less to a Celtics team that is just 4-4 at home this postseason, compared to 4-2 on the road.
As it stands, the Celtics are favorites to win Game 2, the series (-220) and have the second-best oods to win the NBA Finals (+145). If they fail to bounce back and take Game 2, that could change in a big way heading back to Miami where the Heat are undefeated this postseason.
