Celtics vs. Hawks Game 6 Analysis

After leading for most of the game, a combination of turnovers, ineffective offense, and excellence from Trae Young doomed the Celtics in Game 5. In what has become an all-to-familiar result, Boston carried a double-digit lead into the final five minutes of the game and then lost a chance to end the series due to turnovers.

The Celtics averaged 16.8 turnovers per game in their NBA Finals loss to the Golden State Warriors last year. During the regular season, those issues appeared to have been fixed as Boston averaged 13.4 turnovers per game, seventh-fewest in the league. That improvement carried over into the playoffs, but only for the first half of games. Boston's 5.8 turnovers per first half ranks second-best, but in the second half of games, that number jumps to 8.2, third-worst. On the other side, the Hawks' 3.2 turnovers per fourth quarter ranks second-best.

Adding to the Celtics' late-game struggles has been the impressive fourth-quarter play from Young. Young is averaging 12.0 points per fourth quarter this postseason, second behind only Jimmy Butler. Jayson Tatum (6.6) and Jaylen Brown (6.2) rank 14th and 19th, respectively.

Heading back to Atlanta, where the Hawks are averaging 17.5 points more per game this series than in Boston, the Celtics need to improve their fourth-quarter performance to close out the series. Boston is capable of greatness; they just need to play to their potential down the stretch and not take their foot off the gas.

Despite their late-game turnover woes, the Celtics remain the favorite to win Game 6 (-320), the series (-2500) and the NBA Championship (+165).
