3 MLB FanDuel Value Plays for Thursday 6/15/23

Finding low-salary production is one way to get a leg up on the competition in MLB DFS.

Here are some low-salary players to target on FanDuel for tonight's main slate.

Michael Grove, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers ($6,100)

A lot of fantasy players will probably look at Michael Grove, see an 8.28 ERA, and decide to pass. However, there are reasons to want to play him tonight.

There are a lot of numbers in Grove's profile that suggest he should experience some positive regression. His batting average on balls in play is .359, and we'd expect that to lower to closer to .290. He's stranding only 50.8% of baserunners, which is pretty flukey in just 25 innings. He has been able to strike out batters at a respectable 20.2% clip so far this season, too.

Grove and the Dodgers are decent favorites when looking at the MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. They're taking on a Chicago White Sox lineup that doesn't put much fear into pitchers. The Sox rank 25th in weighted on-base average (wOBA) and 24th in weighted runs created plus (wRC+).

Grove could easily pick up a win for your lineup for just $6,100, which would certainly make him worth playing. He's the best value pitcher in numberFire's model by a decent margin.

Mauricio Dubon, 2B, Houston Astros ($2,900)

Mauricio Dubon checks a few boxes that we look for when rostering a value hitter. He will get a good spot in the lineup and has a platoon advantage.

Dubon's numbers this season are not anything special, but that changes when he faces left-handed pitching. He has a .440 wOBA and a 187 wRC+ over a small sample this season. Those numbers are backed up by a solid .351 wOBA and 125 wRC+ in his career against lefties.

Dubon will likely be hitting leadoff for the Houston Astros against MacKenzie Gore. Gore has shown some promise but has also been knocked around a bit. He's allowed opponents to barrel the ball 9.9% of the time, the 12th-highest rate for pitchers in the Majors this season.

The Astros have an implied team total of 4.57 runs, so rostering their leadoff hitter for under $3000 makes a lot of sense.

Donovan Solano, 1B, Minnesota Twins ($2,400)

From one leadoff hitter on a good offense to another, Donovan Solano is another player who can save us salary while still getting a good number of plate appearances tonight.

Solano will never be confused for a power hitter, but he's having a nice season for himself. He has the second-best wRC+ of his career and the best expected wOBA (xwOBA). He's been able to take advantage of the platoon when he's faced lefties this season, as his wOBA against southpaws is .359.

Solano and the Minnesota Twins will face Matt Boyd. Boyd has struggled this season, sporting a 4.70 fielding independent pitching (FIP). He also has a high walk rate of 9.5% and struggles more with righties like Solano than lefties.

Minnesota should be able to put up some runs against Boyd and the Detroit Tigers, and Solano definitely could be a part of that big game at a really low salary.
