Vikings Reveal Big Update on Dalvin Tomlinson’s Contract Situation

Heading into the offseason $20-plus million over the cap, the Minnesota Vikings will have to make some tough decisions ahead of free agency. One thing they must decide on is the future of defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, whose contract is set to void in the coming days.

However, the Vikings have now revealed a big development on Tomlinson's situation.

The team and Tomlinson have agreed to delay the defender's void date until March 15. This affords both sides time to potentially work on a contract extension and keep him around.

Minnesota exploring the possibility of re-signing the sixth-year pro is significant. If the Vikings let Tomlinson's contract void, they'd then be hit with a $7.5 million dead-cap charge to their 2023 books and he'd be slated to hit unrestricted free agency. Instead, the team now can look at ways to retain him and potentially push out that cap hit to a later date.

Cap flexibility will be a major focus in Minnesota this offseason. Not only does the front office need to find cost-effective ways to improve this roster, but they also will be tasked with negotiating a lucrative extension for star wideout Justin Jefferson.

Locking down Jefferson for the long-term is priority No. 1, which could lead to a few tough breakups. Re-signing Tomlinson to a deal that frees up immediate space is one way the Vikings could lessen their financial burden this offseason.
