Never one to do things the usual way, Rob Gronkowski has made a surprise return to the NFL, being traded from the New England Patriots to re-join Tom Brady with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ahead of the 2020 NFL season.
It's always tough to know exactly how well a player will fare after taking a year off from football, but according to odds released by FanDuel Sportsbook, Gronkowski's projections for the 2020 season are strong.
Rob Gronkowski Projections 2020
The projections for Gronkowski's first season with the Buccaneers are for 599.5 yards and 5.5 touchdowns as he re-unites with Brady. The over and under odds are even on that yardage total, while the under is favored (-154) on that touchdown number.
Those stats would be a disappointment for a prime Gronk, but they would come close to what he posted in his last NFL season in 2018 — 682 yards and 3 touchdowns. Considering he has been a WWE champion more recently than an NFL player, only seeing a slight drop in production would be pretty impressive.
These projections suggest his fantasy football value won't be anything special, but as we saw last season, it doesn't take much for a tight end to be worth considering.
Maybe more importantly, the NFL is just a lot more fun with Gronk involved, and it will be great to see him back on the field in 2020.
