After beginning his NFL career in the shadow of legendary quarterback Tom Brady in New England, current San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has now surpassed Brady in one area of the most important stat of all: wins.

Not all-time wins, of course, as that mark belongs to Brady at 215 for the regular season, 30 for the playoffs, and 245 combined. But as far as the first 18 games of any quarterback's career has gone, only two QBs in NFL history have more wins than Jimmy G.

Jimmy Garoppolo Career Record as NFL Starter

At 16-2 in his first 18 NFL starts under center, Garoppolo joins Dan Marino and Roger Staubach for for the second-best starting record by an NFL quarterback behind Daryle Lamonica (17-1) and Ben Roethlisberger (17-1). However, Brady sits behind that entire group at 14-4 in his first 18 starts.

What might be most impressive, though, is that Garoppolo is the only player in the bunch to win those 16 games with more than one team. Playing for both the Patriots and the 49ers in his career thus far, Jimmy G has enjoyed success in both places.

It's possible some of this success could be attributed to playing for two great coaches in Bill Belichick and Kyle Shanahan, but the fact is that Garoppolo's team has won more than 88 percent of the games he has started at the NFL level.

In Thursday night's record-setting win over the Arizona Cardinals, Garoppolo threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns, as the Niners and Patriots remain the only two undefeated teams at 8-0.

Perhaps, even more exciting about this dynamic is that we could be in line to see a Super Bowl matchup between Brady and his former backup with the way each of those teams has been playing this season.
