Jaire Alexander's play this season has been a huge reason why the Green Bay Packers are entering their Week 5 bye with an undefeated 4-0 record. He has been a shutdown cornerback and proven to be one of the best at his position.
In the Packers win on Monday Night Football this past week, Alexander matched up with one of the best wide receivers in the NFL so far this season in Atlanta Falcons' Calvin Ridley and Alexander put on another showstopping performance.
In 2019, Alexander had 17 passes defended and he is off to an even better start this year. When opposing quarterbacks are targeting him, they have completed just 62.5 percent of their passes. In fact, Alexander is holding recievers to 5.7 yards per target and also has a sack, interception, and safety this season.
The 2018 second-round pick out of Louisville has blossomed into a young star for a Packers' defense that continues to get better and better each week. Playing for a team known for its offensive success, Alexander is starting to bring some much-needed attention to what has been a solid defense so far this season.
Following his shutdown performance in Week 4, Alexander now has a 90.8 coverage grade, according to Pro Football Focus. This grade ranks No. 1 in the league and is a full six grading points higher than the next best cornerback.
Alexander and the Packers are riding high into the bye week and there is no reason to believe they can't keep up this kind of success. If Alexander continues to play at the level he has so far this season, he will join the ranks of the elite cornerbacks and could even be considered for the Defensive Player of the Year Award.
