Fantasy Football Start/Sit Week 6 Today: Who to Start and Sit This Week

Week 6 brings the first meaningful bye week of the fantasy football season, with the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, and Minnesota Vikings all off. That takes several high-end fantasy options out of the player pool and makes getting the borderline lineup decisions right even more important.

There are still plenty of favorable matchups worth attacking, but opportunity and recent usage are just as important as the opponent.

Using our fantasy football projections as a guide, here are some players to start and some to consider sitting in Week 6.

This article is geared toward 12-team, half-PPR scoring formats with only one starting quarterback -- though the general advice can be loosely applied to most formats. Injury information may change after this article is published. You can stay up to date with this week’s injury news via our NFL player news page.

Today’s Fantasy Football Start/Sit Advice (Week 6)

Fantasy Football Starts for Week 6

Dameon Pierce, RB, Philadelphia Eagles

Any Time Touchdown Scorer

Dameon Pierce‘s Week 5 numbers weren't pretty, but his workload makes him an appealing Week 6 fantasy start.

With Saquon Barkley sidelined, Pierce took over the Philadelphia Eagles' backfield and played every offensive snap over the final two quarters last week. He handled every running back carry during that stretch and posted a 64% route share, although he totaled only 12 yards on 13 touches against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The matchup gets considerably easier today against the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers have allowed 5.4 yards per carry, and Pierce should have a path to the kind of volume that can compensate for mediocre efficiency.

With Barkley out, Pierce profiles as a viable RB2 or flex play.

Josh Downs, WR, Indianapolis Colts

Josh Downs - Receiving Yds

Oct 18 5:01pm UTCMore odds in Sportsbook

Josh Downs has been somewhat frustrating through five games, failing to reach 50 receiving yards three times, but his underlying usage remains encouraging.

Downs owns an 18.8% target share and a 24.2% first-read share this season, along with four red-zone targets. He also comfortably leads the Indianapolis Colts with a 30.3% share of the team's air yards.

Now he draws a Tennessee Titans defense that has been particularly vulnerable to slot receivers. The Titans have allowed 11.5 yards per target when wideouts line up in the slot while also surrendering the second-most yards per target and fantasy points per opportunity to slot receivers.

That gives Downs a nice bounce-back setup as a WR3 or flex option.

Dalton Kincaid, TE, Buffalo Bills

Any Time Touchdown Scorer

Starting Dalton Kincaid requires overlooking some ugly recent box scores, but this is a good week to give him another chance.

Kincaid has managed only two total receptions for a combined 14 yards over his past two games, and he's been held below 4.0 PPR points in three straight contests. Still, he has 16 catches for 277 yards and a touchdown through five games, and his season-long efficiency remains intriguing.

He also gets a favorable matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders have allowed the fifth-most receiving fantasy points per game and third-most receiving touchdowns to tight ends. Kincaid's recent target volume makes him risky, but in a thin fantasy position, the matchup and his big-play ability are enough to put him back into TE1 consideration.

Fantasy Football Sits for Week 6

Justin Herbert, QB, Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert - Passing Yds

Oct 18 8:26pm UTCMore odds in Sportsbook

Justin Herbert is a difficult name to bench, but his 2026 production hasn't justified treating him as an automatic fantasy starter.

Herbert enters Week 6 as the QB33 in fantasy points per game. Among qualified quarterbacks, he's produced the 10th-lowest yards per attempt, sixth-lowest passing success rate, third-highest turnover-worthy throw rate, and fifth-fewest fantasy points per dropback.

The circumstances around him aren't helping. Herbert has already been sacked 17 times behind an injury-riddled offensive line, and the Kansas City Chiefs have allowed the fifth-fewest yards per attempt and third-fewest fantasy points per dropback to opposing quarterbacks. There are enough stronger streaming options available this week to keep Herbert on the bench.

Omarion Hampton, RB, Los Angeles Chargers

Omarion Hampton - Rush Attempts

Oct 18 8:26pm UTCMore odds in Sportsbook

The concern with Omarion Hampton is becoming less about his talent and more about his workload.

Hampton played at least 58% of the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive snaps in each of the opening two weeks, but that number dropped to roughly 35% in Week 4 and 30% in Week 5. Last week, he handled 41.2% of the team's rushing attempts while playing just 31.7% of the offensive snaps and running only two routes.

He has averaged 54.2 rushing yards per game this season, but a three-man backfield with Keaton Mitchell and Kimani Vidal dramatically lowers Hampton's floor. Kansas City has also allowed the eighth-lowest rushing success rate, fewest yards before contact per attempt, and third-lowest missed-tackle rate to running backs.

Hampton is more of a touchdown-dependent flex than a player we should feel comfortable starting.

DK Metcalf, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

DK Metcalf - Receiving Yds

Oct 18 5:01pm UTCMore odds in Sportsbook

D.K. Metcalf still possesses weekly big-play upside, but the production hasn't been consistent enough to make him a nailed-on Week 6 starter.

Metcalf enters Sunday as the WR40 in fantasy points per game and has topped 15 PPR points only once this season. He's commanded a 19.9% target share and has been used downfield with 10 deep targets, but he's averaging only 1.18 yards per route run.

The results have been even more concerning lately as Metcalf is coming off a 12-yard performance and has only one touchdown through five games. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers‘ aggressive defense could also cause problems as the Buccaneers blitz at one of the NFL's highest rates.

Unless your bye-week situation leaves you short on alternatives, Metcalf is better viewed as a volatile WR3 than a player who needs to be in the lineup.

Fantasy Football Start/Sit FAQ

Who should I start in fantasy football this week?

The best starts are typically players with strong recent usage, favorable matchups and a reliable path to touches or targets. Matchup-specific factors and changes in workload should also be considered before setting your lineup.

Who should I sit in fantasy football this week?

Players can be worth sitting when they face difficult matchups, have seen their role decrease or carry significant risk due to injuries or inconsistent usage. Even proven players can be matchup-based sits in a given week.

How do you decide who to start or sit in fantasy football?

Start/sit decisions should account for a player's expected volume, recent production, matchup, offensive role and game environment. Comparing those factors against your other lineup options can help determine which player offers the best combination of floor and upside.

Should I start a player with a difficult matchup?

It depends. A difficult matchup can lower a player's expected production, but high-volume players can still deliver strong fantasy performances regardless of the matchup. The player's role and expected opportunity should usually carry more weight than matchup alone. Another huge factor is whether or not you have quality alternatives on your roster.
