The decision to trade for DeForest Buckner has worked out better than anyone could've predicted. He has been an absolute monster in the middle of the Indianapolis Colts' defense, proving to be one of the most impactful defenders in the NFL.

As the best player on the league's top scoring defense, it's hard to argue that any offseason acquisition has been more impactful than Buckner thus far.

Buckner is currently Pro Football Focus' highest-graded interior defensive lineman, posting a grade of 90.7. That puts him ahead of some truly elite names, like Aaron Donald (87.7), Fletcher Cox (81.5) and Chris Jones (78.2). He's also received the sixth-highest grade among all qualified defenders.

Judging by PFF's metrics, this is clearly the best start of his career. His highest season-long grade prior to 2020 was the 81.5 he received last season.

He's also transformed Indianapolis' defense. Last year, the Colts were a middle-of-the-road defense (No. 18 in points allowed) but they're currently the league's stingiest unit, surrendering just 14.0 points per game.

While other offseason additions like Tom Brady, Philip Rivers and DeAndre Hopkins have been huge successes as well, none have had the impact that Buckner has.

He currently has +4200 odds (T-No. 20 in the NFL) to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, per FanDuel Sportsbook. If Buckner keeps maintains this pace, expect him to rise up that list pretty quickly.
