The Atlanta Falcons have traded quarterback Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts for a 2022 third-round pick. But the biggest loser from this trade wasn't even involved in the deal, as this news has to sting for the San Francisco 49ers.
The Indianapolis Colts always felt like the best trade destination for Jimmy Garoppolo. Not only are they now out of the running, but Ryan was only dealt for a third-round pick, meaning it's hard to see a Garoppolo trade fetching the massive return some believed it would.
With Indy out of the mix, here are the three best remaining trade destinations for Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason.
Jimmy Garoppolo Trade 2022
3. Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers defense is ready to compete. The rest of the roster might not be quite yet, but there are some talented skill-position players here, like D.J. Moore and Christian McCaffrey. It's not hard to envision Carolina being in the postseason mix in the weak NFC if the Panthers can upgrade at QB. Whatever you think about Jimmy G, he'd give this team a much better chance to win than Sam Darnold would. The biggest hurdle here is that Carolina doesn't have its second- or third-round picks this year, but these two sides shouldn't have too much trouble figuring out a deal.
2. Seattle Seahawks
It's hard to follow what the Seattle Seahawks' plan is right now. The Russell Wilson trade and release of Bobby Wagner seemed to signal the beginning of a rebuild for the franchise. But Seattle spent big money to retain guys like Quandre Diggs, suggesting the front office could be looking to retool more than rebuild. If the Seahawks are searching for a veteran QB to keep them in the playoff, Jimmy G is probably their best bet at this point.
1. New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints roster is pretty loaded on both sides of the ball, but they're still missing a quarterback. And they somehow managed to clear enough cap space to sign a big-name QB during their failed pursuit of Deshaun Watson. Pivoting to Jimmy G could make a ton of sense here, as the Saints would be legit playoff contenders with the 30-year-old at the helm.
