NHL Predictions Today: NHL Picks, Props and Betting Odds for Wednesday, October 28

Today’s Top NHL Picks at a Glance
- Capitals -1.5 (+106)
- Flames-Oilers Over 6.5 (-120)
- William Nylander Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-123)
Wednesday's NHL schedule features four games, including the latest Battle of Alberta and a matchup between the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche.
With only four games to choose from, today's card is more about finding the best spots rather than spreading action across the entire slate.
Let's break down three NHL best bets for Wednesday, including one player prop.

Today’s Best NHL Predictions, Player Props, Best Bets
Washington Capitals -1.5 (+106)
Flyers at Capitals — 7:30 p.m. ET
Puck Line
The Washington Capitals are a sizable moneyline favorite against the Philadelphia Flyers, but rather than laying -235, I prefer taking a shot on Washington to win by multiple goals.
Philadelphia enters Wednesday at just 3-7-3 and has the added challenge of playing on the second night of a back-to-back. Washington, meanwhile, enters at 6-4-0 and gets this matchup at home with considerably more rest.
That scheduling spot makes an already difficult road matchup even tougher for Philadelphia.
The Caps check enough boxes today and can win by multiple goals.
Flames-Oilers Over 6.5 (-120)
Flames at Oilers — 8:30 p.m. ET
Total Goals
The Edmonton Oilers have gotten off to an 8-2-2 start, and their recent games have consistently produced plenty of offense.
The over has cashed in five consecutive Edmonton games entering Wednesday, and another high-scoring matchup wouldn't be surprising against the Calgary Flames today.
Edmonton's offensive ceiling makes the over appealing. The Oilers are capable of doing a lot of the work themselves while Calgary doesn't necessarily need to produce a huge offensive night for this game to reach seven goals.
In what should be another entertaining edition of the Battle of Alberta, I'll back over 6.5 goals.
William Nylander Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-123)
Maple Leafs at Kraken — 10:00 p.m. ET
William Nylander Shots on Goal
William Nylander's shot prop is my favorite player prop on Wednesday's slate.
Nylander is averaging 2.9 shots per game this season, and that number rises to 3.2 per game across his last 10 outings. That puts him in a favorable spot against a line of only 2.5 shots tonight.
The appeal here is that we don't need Nylander to score or even record a point. His shooting volume alone has been strong enough to make three shots a reasonable target, and he continues to play a prominent offensive role for Toronto.
At close to even money, I'll take Nylander to record at least three shots today.
NHL Betting -- Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Puck Line in NHL Betting?
The puck line is hockey's version of a point spread. The standard puck line is usually set at 1.5 goals, meaning a team listed at -1.5 must win by at least two goals for the bet to cash. A team at +1.5 can either win outright or lose by one goal.
What Does the Moneyline Mean in NHL Betting?
A moneyline bet is a wager on which team will win the game. Favorites have negative odds, while underdogs have positive odds. Unlike the puck line, the margin of victory does not matter.
What Are NHL Player Props?
NHL player props allow bettors to wager on an individual player's performance rather than the final result of the game. Common markets include goals, assists, points, shots on goal, and goalie saves.
What Should You Consider When Betting on NHL Games?
Several factors can influence NHL betting decisions, including starting goaltenders, injuries, recent team performance, special-teams play, expected line combinations, and whether a team is playing on consecutive nights. Because goalie confirmations can significantly impact a matchup, it can be useful to check the latest lineup news before placing a bet.
