NBA Predictions for Today: Picks and Best Bets

Pistons Moneyline (-120)

76ers at Pistons — 7:00 p.m. ET

Moneyline

Detroit Pistons
Nov 5 12:10am UTCMore odds in Sportsbook

The Detroit Pistons have been outstanding defensively to begin the season, allowing an NBA-low 100.3 points per game while outscoring opponents by 11.6 points per contest. They're coming off a dominant 124-91 victory over Charlotte and have won six of their first seven games.

Detroit also has a recent head-to-head advantage over the Philadelphia 76ers, winning 106-93 on the road on October 25. Cade Cunningham led the way with 26 points in that matchup while the Pistons held Philadelphia to just 40% shooting from the field.

Cunningham has averaged 23.7 points and 7.1 assists per game this season, and Detroit's defense should give them a chance to slow down Philadelphia's potent offense once again.

The absence of Jalen Duren is a concern for Detroit, but the Pistons have continued to produce without their starting center.

With home-court advantage and an excellent defense, Detroit is an appealing moneyline play.

Boston Celtics -11.5 (-110)

Bucks at Celtics — 7:30 p.m. ET

Spread

Boston Celtics
Nov 5 12:40am UTCMore odds in Sportsbook

The Boston Celtics have started the season 5-2, and Wednesday's home matchup with the struggling Milwaukee Bucks presents an opportunity for a convincing victory.

Milwaukee enters the contest with a 1-6 record and ranks 27th in defensive rating (120.0). The Bucks are also allowing 124.1 points per game, the third-most in the NBA.

That's a concerning combination against a Boston team ranked seventh in offensive rating (116.0). The Celtics have also posted a +6.7 net rating, while Milwaukee has been outscored by an average of 13 points per game.

Jayson Tatum gives Boston a dependable offensive centerpiece, and the Celtics have the shooting and offensive depth to exploit Milwaukee's defensive struggles.

Although this is a sizable spread, the difference in overall team performance makes Boston worth backing at home.

Oklahoma City Thunder -3.5 (-110)

Cavaliers at Thunder — 8:00 p.m. ET

Spread

Oklahoma City Thunder
Nov 5 1:10am UTCMore odds in Sportsbook

The Oklahoma City Thunder host the Cleveland Cavaliers in one of Wednesday's marquee matchups, and Oklahoma City's defense could be the deciding factor.

The Thunder have opened the season 5-2 and rank 12th in defensive rating (110.4). They've also done a good job taking care of the basketball, posting a turnover rate of just 14.0%, the fifth-lowest mark in the league.

Cleveland has been effective offensively, averaging 119.7 points per game, but the Cavaliers have been less impressive on the other end. They rank 17th in defensive rating (112.8) and are surrendering 116.1 points per contest.

Oklahoma City also has an advantage with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who averaged 31.1 points and 6.6 assists per game last season. His ability to create efficient offense in the half court should be especially valuable in what could be a competitive game.

The Thunder are coming off a 117-112 road victory over Cleveland on Monday, and returning home for the rematch give me another reason for optimism with this bet.

Toronto Raptors Moneyline (+152)

Raptors at Nuggets — 9:00 p.m. ET

Moneyline

Toronto Raptors
Nov 5 2:10am UTCMore odds in Sportsbook

The Toronto Raptors enter Wednesday's matchup against the Denver Nuggets as underdogs, but Toronto's impressive early-season numbers suggest the Raptors have a legitimate opportunity to pull off the upset.

Toronto is just 4-3, but their underlying numbers are strong. The Raptors rank sixth in offensive rating (116.3) and seventh in defensive rating (108.5). They have also posted a +7.8 net rating, compared to Denver's -2.9 mark.

One of Toronto's biggest strengths has been its work on the offensive glass. The Raptors lead the NBA with a 36.9% offensive rebounding rate, while Denver ranks 26th in defensive rebounding rate (64.9%). That discrepancy could help Toronto generate additional scoring opportunities throughout the game.

The Raptors are also playing at a faster pace than the Nuggets, ranking seventh in pace compared to Denver's 22nd. With Scottie Barnes helping lead Toronto's versatile attack, the Raptors have multiple ways to challenge Denver's defense.

Denver is allowing 115.7 points per game and ranks 23rd in defensive rating (115.5). Given Toronto's efficiency advantage and ability to create second-chance points, the Raptors offer appealing underdog value at +152.

NBA Betting -- Frequently Asked Questions

What does the point spread mean in NBA betting?

The point spread is a margin set by oddsmakers to level the playing field between two unevenly matched teams. For example, if the Golden State Warriors are listed at -7.5, they need to win by 8 or more points for a bet on them to cash. Conversely, a bet on their opponent at +7.5 wins if that team loses by 7 or fewer points — or wins outright.

What is the moneyline?

The moneyline is a straight-up bet on which team wins the game, with no spread involved. Favorites carry a negative number (e.g., -200, meaning you must risk $200 to win $100), while underdogs carry a positive number (e.g., +170, meaning a $100 bet returns $170 profit).

How does the over/under (game total) work?

Oddsmakers set a projected combined score for the game, and bettors wager on whether the actual total will go over or under that number. For instance, if the total is set at 224.5 points, an over bet wins if both teams combine for 225 or more points. NBA totals can swing based on pace of play, rest situations, and injuries, so it's worth tracking those factors before placing a total bet.

What are NBA player props?

Player props are bets tied to an individual player's statistical performance rather than the game's outcome. Common prop bet markets include points scored, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, and combinations of those stats.
