Mountain West Conference Tournament Odds: Will San Diego State Prevail in a Tough Field?

For the 18th consecutive season, the Mountain West basketball tournament will dawn upon Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center.

In 2024, the tournament on UNLV's campus is set to be tough competition. At FanDuel Sportsbook, the Mountain West Tournament odds are closer together than any other grouping in men's Division I basketball.

With the postseason action set to commence on Wednesday (March 13th), there really isn't any time to waste. Before the Mountain West Tournament tips, let's take a look at the bracket, betting odds and best bets.

Mountain West Tournament Best Bets

San Diego State (+230)

Going by the odds, the San Diego State Aztecs are still the team to beat in the Mountain West even though they didn't win the regular-season crown. Notably, head coach Brian Dutcher and the Aztecs produced a prolific run to the NCAA Tournament national title game last season. Prior to that, San Diego State did well to take care of business in this same conference tournament in 2022-23.

Further out, the Aztecs have won the MWC Tourney in three of the past six campaigns. However, SDSU didn't exactly have their best regular season in 2024. They played to a 22-9 overall record but managed an 11-7 figure against Mountain West foes -- that was good enough for only fifth place in the conference.

At numberFire, San Diego State (12.94 nERD) is ranked 20th in Division I. Still, that is the highest rating for any MWC institution in 2024. SDSU has been bolstered by a strong defense to this point, allowing only 66.3 PPG, which lands them within the 90th percentile of men's college basketball. KenPom slots the Aztecs eighth in adjusted defensive efficiency.

With the Aztecs holding the fifth seed in the upcoming conference tournament, they are locked into their opening-round matchup. Set for Thursday (March 14th) afternoon, SDSU has a date with the hometown UNLV Runnin' Rebels.

Right now, we see San Diego State labeled with +230 odds to win the Mountain West Tournament. Interestingly, that is the longest listing for any favorite within the conference tourney markets.

Utah State (+440)

As the pride of Logan, UT, the Utah State Aggies are one of the top all-around teams in the nation. Head coach Danny Sprinkle -- in just his first season leading USU -- has made noticeable improvements with the Aggies.

Utah State went 26-5 in 2023-24, which includes a 14-4 record in conference. That was good enough to earn the Aggies their first Mountain West regular-season title since 2019. With that, USU is the Mountain West's top seed for the upcoming conference tournament.

Being No. 1 in the grouping, the Aggies are awaiting the winner of Wednesday's tilt between Wyoming and Fresno State. Against those two sides, U-State went an undefeated 4-0 in 2024. That will give confidence to an already talented group from Logan.

FanDuel Sportsbook has USU listed at +440 odds to win the Mountain West Tournament in Vegas despite having just won the conference. Back at numberFire, the college basketball power rankings have the Aggies (11.01 nERD) as only the fifth-best team in the Mountain West.

Nevada (+550)

Other than a midseason hiccup, the Nevada Wolf Pack has been impressive yet again in 2024. Head coach Steve Alford has built a nice program in Reno. Behind solid defense and consistent rebounding, UNR will turn heads in enemy territory (Las Vegas).

The team from Northern Nevada is approaching the conference tournament on fire. Heading down to "Sin City," the Pack are currently riding a seven-game winning streak. Further out, Nevada-Reno has emerged victorious in 10 of their past 11 contests.

The Wolf Pack did well to earn the second seed for this year's Mountain West tournament. Like others here, UNR will have the luxury of sitting out of Wednesday's opening round. When Thursday arrives, Nevada will face the winner of Colorado State and San Jose State. If the Spartans can somehow upset CSU, the Pack will have a fairly easy path to the semifinals.

All that considered, Nevada absolutely has value in this market. FanDuel Sportsbook has UNR listed with +550 odds. Additionally, the Wolf Pack's (11.39 nERD) power ranking at numberFire leaves them fourth in the Mountain West.

Still, Nevada has defeated all conference rivals ahead of them at least once in 2024.
