Division foes Seattle Mariners (29-26) and Houston Astros (24-30) will square off for this evening's Free Game of the Day.

Seattle currently leads the AL West by three and a half games, and tonight's outcome could reinforce their early-season dominance.

Luis Castillo, last season's fifth-place finisher in the AL Cy Young voting, will be on the bump for the Mariners.

Through 11 starts, Castillo owns a 3.31 ERA, 3.70 xERA, 3.68 xFIP, 3.51 SIERA, and 25.6% K%. While his strikeout rate is a tad down from last year, his overall numbers are strikingly similar to his 2023 campaign.

Houston, who comes in with a .265 BA (2nd), .420 SLG (4th), .156 ISO (9th), and a mere 18.0% K% (best) versus right-handed pitchers, won't be an easy matchup. With that being said, the 'Stros have been struggling on the road, generating only a .302 wOBA (17th), .372 SLG (17th), 95 wRC+ (17th), and .119 ISO (26th).

Castillo hasn't let a whole lot get away from him as of late, surrendering only 10 ER through 43 2/3 IP in his last seven starts. Past him, Seattle's bullpen sports the 6th-best WHIP, 11th-best xFIP, and 11th-best SIERA. The Astros have yet to see Castillo this season, so I think Seattle's arms can limit the damage in this one.

Hunter Brown will get the ball for Houston. Brown's 7.06 ERA jumps off the page but is mitigated once we take a glance at his underlying numbers. Those marks include a 4.40 xERA, 4.20 xFIP, and a 4.38 SIERA. He's been unlucky with a 21.4% HR/FB ratio, but it's still noteworthy that he is struggling with a 1.78 WHIP, 1.87 HR/9, and a meaty 11.9% walk rate.

Seattle's lineup has been underwhelming, but they've begun to find their footing in May, with Dylan Moore, Cal Raleigh, and Josh Rojas showing encouraging marks against righties.

Houston has gone 2-8 in games where Brown has made an appearance, and each of the two victories was won by just one run. This matchup could invigorate a Mariners team that didn't have much trouble scoring in 2023, so I'm into backing their moneyline odds.

numberFire's game projections give Seattle a 57.9% lean in this one, while these -122 odds suggest a 54.9% probability.
