Belgium vs. Ukraine Analysis

Belgium suffered a surprising 1-0 loss to Slovakia in its opening match but bounced back with a 2-0 win over Romania last time out.

Despite the loss, the expected goals (xG) data -- per FBRef's xG model -- looks really good for Belgium as they've amassed 3.4 xG and given up 1.5 xG. They were particularly unlucky in the defeat to Slovakia as the Belgians won the xG battle in that one 1.6-0.6.

Ukraine's story through two matches is similar to Belgium's. Ukraine lost 3-0 to Romania in its first match, but they were hard done by as the xG tally was just 1.1-0.7 in favor of Romania.

In their second fixture, Ukraine responded with a 2-1 win over Slovakia, netting two second-half goals to come back from a goal down. The win was fully deserved as Ukraine won on xG 1.5-0.8.

Opta's model hands Belgium win odds of 54.4% while projecting a draw (23.6%) and a Ukraine win (22.0%) as nearly equally likely.

MasseyRatings are slightly lower on Belgium but still favor them, putting the Belgians' win odds at 50% and Ukraine's at 23%.

According to those models, the Euro 2024 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook are a little too high on Belgium. Belgium's -150 moneyline implies win odds of 60%.
