Today’s Best College Basketball Predictions, Picks
San Jose State -8.5 (-106)
UTSA at San Jose State — 3:00 p.m. ET
Spread
I'm backing the San Jose State Spartans to take care of business at home against the UTSA Roadrunners as the matchup sets up well for the Spartans.
UTSA struggled badly on both ends of the floor last season, averaging just 69.5 points per game while allowing 80.7 points per contest. San Jose State wasn't particularly strong defensively, either, but its average of 72.0 points per game last season gives it an offensive advantage in this matchup.
The Roadrunners also shot just 39.8% from the field and 29.7% from three last year. San Jose State has enough offensive firepower to take advantage of those deficiencies, and I expect the Spartans to build a comfortable lead and cover the spread.
McNeese -4.5 (-105)
McNeese at UAB — 5:30 p.m. ET
Spread
The McNeese Cowboys are one of my favorite early bets on the board as they take on the UAB Blazers.
McNeese has made the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons and brings back the core of a program that has established itself as one of the Southland's best. The Cowboys were especially disruptive defensively last season, forcing turnovers on 24.5% of opponents' possessions, which ranked first nationally.
UAB has plenty of new offensive talent, but the Blazers shot only 27% from three last season.
McNeese's ability to create turnovers combined with its continuity gives it the edge in a game where I expect the Cowboys to control the tempo.
Bowling Green +3.5 (-102)
Bowling Green at Georgia State — 6:00 p.m. ET
Moneyline
Spread
Total Points
I'm taking the points with the Bowling Green Falcons against the Georgia State Panthers.
Bowling Green is coming off a 16-13 season, including a 9-9 mark in MAC play, while Georgia State went 10-19 overall and 7-11 in the Sun Belt last season. That makes the underdog side of the 3.5-point spread particularly appealing in a matchup where the teams aren't separated by much from a recent-results standpoint.
KenPom actually has Bowling Green (201st) slightly ahead of Georgia State (216th), so getting 3.5 points of cushion with the Falcons makes this an appealing wager.
