2026 Breeders’ Cup Today's Picks

Key Takeaways:

  • Breeders’ Cup Saturday features nine championship races at Keeneland, with the world’s best three-year-olds and older horses competing across dirt and turf sprints, miles, and routes. The $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic headlines a loaded card.
  • Knightsbridge is the top Classic pick after a dominant 6 ¼-length win in the Pacific Classic (G1). Sovereignty and Golden Tempo are major threats, while defending champion Forever Young remains a contender despite needing to rebound from his latest prep.
  • Ways and Means is the leading choice in the Filly & Mare Sprint, while Cy Fair offers value in the Turf Sprint after a troubled trip at Kentucky Downs. Further Ado looks tough to beat in the Dirt Mile, with Chunk of Gold a leading alternative.
  • Precise gets the nod in the Filly & Mare Turf as she stretches out beyond a mile, while Hymn is the upset pick in the Sprint against favorite Englishman. In the Mile, Rhetorical has home-track form and versatility to challenge defending champion Notable Speech.
  • Fully Subscribed could benefit from a pace setup that makes life difficult for Distaff favorite Nitrogen. On turf, Benvenuto Cellini and Hotazhell are appealing contenders in the Turf, with firmer ground potentially helping Cellini return to his best form.

The best horses in the world aged three and up take the spotlight Saturday, October 31 at Keeneland Race Course for the second day of the Breeders’ Cup World Champions. After two-year-olds shine on Future Stars Friday, it’s time for the older divisions to shine. On turf and dirt, in sprints, miles, and routes – the card brings the best of all kinds of racing to Lexington, Kentucky, and bettors can enjoy some of the most lucrative payouts of the horse racing year.

The richest race of Breeders’ Cup weekend is the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Forever Young will try to become the second horse in history to win the race twice, after only Tiznow. However, the competition is stiff: 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty joins the fray, 2026 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo and 2026 Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo do as well, and Knightsbridge will try to run back to his dazzling effort in the Pacific Classic (G1) this summer.

However, the Classic is only one of nine prestigious races on the day. Whether you like to bet routes or sprints, dirt races or grass races, there is a lot of money to be made in every division. After all, there is no day with so many full fields of top-class horses like Breeders’ Cup Saturday.

Breeders’ Cup Saturday Horse Racing Picks

These are our top picks and predictions for each Breeders’ Cup race on the Saturday card at Keeneland:

2026 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

Sometimes the favorite is just the goods, and Ways and Means is squarely the horse to beat in this spot. With multiple horses who need to go to the front to do their best work, Ways and Means can take advantage of her tactical speed, lie in wait, and run down the leaders at her will without having to leave herself too much to do late. Then again, after her Bed o’ Roses (G2) win two back, it’s hard to imagine what is “too much” for her to have to do late – it looked hopeless for her even with a furlong to go, and yet she battled to the finish and tagged Grand Job on the wire. With Flavien Prat back in the irons, the best female sprinter in the country looks all systems go.

Evanescence still has to prove she can win going seven furlongs, but has hit the board in all three starts at the distance, finally gets that trip at Keeneland, and has done her best work going 6 ½ furlongs over the Lexington course. She is another who should get a good pace setup, and the price will be big. Kilwin has done just about everything in her 10-race career, but her best work has come going seven furlongs on the dirt, and she can work a midpack trip and kick on well late for at least a share of the money. Explora faces older for the first time, but with 11 starts she is quite experienced for a sophomore, and she is a horse with tactical speed and real seven-furlong talent.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

Cy Fair has to bounce back from a defeat at Kentucky Downs last out, but she has a right to improve both because of some trip trouble last out and because of the distance factor. Fitter off that try going 6 ½ furlongs, she now cuts back to a more suitable 5 ½-furlong distance, a trip at which she won a pair of graded-stakes races earlier this year. Her tactical speed is a plus. She has done good work with John Velazquez aboard, and even though she was defeated in her only previous start at Keeneland, she wasn’t far away and set the pace that day. Her better style is just a bit off the pace, and that is a trip that can win this race at a square price.

Possiblemente has been successfully reinvented as a sprinter this year. Though he set the pace in his Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint (G2) victory last out, he has also shown he can come from just a bit off the pace, giving him some pace versatility from this nice middle gate. Time to Dazzle comes in from a nose victory over this course and distance in the Franklin (G2), and though that came over yielding ground, she won the Franklin even more impressively over firm ground last year. She should be finishing well late over her favorite course, and though she has had a lot of riders, Oisin Murphy did guide her to a good fourth against top foes in the 1351 Turf Sprint (G2) earlier this year. In Our Time also shines at Keeneland; she won the Giant’s Causeway (G2) in the spring in tactical fashion. More than any other race, Kentucky Downs fares well as a good prep spot for this, and she will be fit turning back from her win going 6 ½ furlongs in their Ladies Turf Sprint (G1) last out.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

The connections of Further Ado didn’t necessarily have a bad option between the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Dirt Mile; they were a furlong either way from what is his best distance, 1 ⅛ miles. However, with the two-turn configuration, the mile shouldn’t be too sharp for him. More than anything, it’s great news for Further Ado that this race is at Keeneland, since his two truly brilliant efforts have come over the dirt in Lexington. He has the right running style for this course and distance, liking to run forward without needing to be on the lead, and jockey Flavien Prat should be able to take full advantage.

Chunk of Gold is one of a few horses in this field who should show pace, but he is fast enough to make that top echelon and gritty enough to dig in when challenged. He won smartly in his only previous start over the Keeneland dirt, and shapes as the horse Further Ado will have to pass in the end to get the job done. Even though Coal Battle hasn’t been much of a winner, he keeps showing up in races at a mile or 1 1/16, whether they’re over one turn or two. He’ll probably find one or two too good once again, but his consistency in graded-stakes company makes him a must-use underneath. It’s still hard to know what Iron Man Cal is on dirt, as he just switched to it two starts back, but he has taken to it well in his last two starts. With the potential to tap into the tactical speed he showed in two-turn turf miles, he is a credible price horse.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

The top of the market will be a battle between Blue Bolt and Precise. Blue Bolt has beaten Precise three times this year at a mile, but now they stretch out to 1 3/16 miles. Blue Bolt has never gone past a mile, whereas Precise tried 1 ¼ miles last out in the Prix de l’Opera (G1) on Arc day at ParisLongchamp last out, chasing on to finish second by 2 ½ lengths. The slight cutback from that distance should suit this Aidan O’Brien charge perfectly. The question is how she starts, as she has never been the best out of the gate, but jockey Ryan Moore has learned how to manage that in top-class races, and he is back in the irons this time, too.

South African star Gimme a Nother has found her best in North America this year, and carries a four-win streak dating back to last September. The distance suits her perfectly, and though her win margins are rarely flashy, she always fires, and she can handle a rail draw. Jancis just missed behind Gimme a Nother in the E. P. Taylor and should take well to the slight cutback. She has tables to turn on Blue Bolt, just like Precise, but her experience over the longer trip makes her an appealing price shot. Kathynmarissa has won her last two races and three of her last five. She just keeps showing up for trainer Chad Brown, and she always finds a late run without having to drop all the way to the clouds.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Sprint

With a heavy favorite who has never faced older and never faced top company going the conventional six-furlong sprint distance, this is a perfect spot to take a shot with a horse who has that kind of experience. Enter Hymn, the breakout older horse in the division. Ever since he has been gelded, he has gotten better and better. Though his Grade 1 win came at seven furlongs, last out in the Forego, he is also a stakes winner going six. He had had a last-minute jockey change to Rafael Bejarano, but they already have a rapport together; in fact, that six-furlong stakes win came with Bejarano riding. He drew well, and should be able to sit a length or two off the pace and get a good run. Trainer Ron Moquett has upset this race once before with Whitmore, and he has another serious chance to throw a wrench in the sprint division this year.

The aforementioned heavy favorite, Englishman, is the fastest horse in the race … at least, at seven furlongs. He has tried six once before, winning an allowance race at Fair Grounds, though this is tougher both in class and with the presence of older. However, he is coming in well, should get a clean trip from the outside, and would not be a surprise even though the price will be minuscule. Nakatomi is still looking for that big breakout race – but there would be no better place for him to get it than here. After all, the late runner is a Keeneland specialist for trainer Wesley Ward, and has won the Phoenix (G2) over this course and distance two straight years. Stradale faces older horses for the first time in this, but comes in off of a stalk-and-pounce win in the Gallant Bob (G2) that has already been franked by second-place Dr. Kapur’s upset win in the Perryville (G3). He has good tactical speed, and big-race rider Flavien Prat is an able replacement for Jose Ortiz, who is Englishman’s regular jockey.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Mile

Rhetorical ran fourth in this race last year and is an even better horse this year. It looked like perhaps he would switch to running longer, after he won the 1 ⅛-mile Turf Classic (G1) on Kentucky Derby day with elan, but he has gone the mile in his last two races and looked like the best version of himself when winning the Keeneland Turf Mile (G1) last out, his second straight score in the race. This year he led at every call – but last year, he tracked a crackling pace and made a rally, meaning he has the versatility to work the trip he needs. In short, he has the class, the versatility, and the affinity for the local course, making him a strong candidate for the minor upset.

If they named Breeders’ Cup races after people, it would be no surprise for this race to be named after Charlie Appleby, who has won four of the last five editions, including with Notable Speech last year. Once again he comes in from a victory in the Woodbine Mile (G1). If his relative dud in the Maker’s Mark Mile (G1) over this course was a question of the trip trouble and the layoff and not the course, he will be hard to hold off late. True Love comes out of a score in the Prix de la Foret (G1), a traditionally strong prep for this, and this Aidan O’Brien trainee is the type who tends to hold her good form once she finds it. Though a win by Lake Forest would be a surprise, he keeps picking up underneath shares against horses of this caliber, including a second behind Rhetorical in the local prep and a second to Notable Speech in the City of York (G1) two back.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Distaff

Local prep winner Fully Subscribed has tables to turn on Nitrogen after that foe thrashed her in the Ogden Phipps (G1) in June, but this is a very different race with a very different setup. Though Nitrogen can run well from a stalking spot, she had the lead all by her lonesome that time, and is at her most brilliant when she gets that trip. There are a few other horses who can pester or even outjump Nitrogen this year, meaning Fully subscribed stands to get her best trip: lying in wait a length or two back and proving mighty hard to contain in the lane.

Eunomia earned her way into this race by upsetting the Clement L. Hirsch (G1) for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr., who is building a nice career on winning big races with longshot shippers. Her close second in the Doubledogdare (G2) earlier this year and a big allowance win over the course a year ago are proof that she can run well at Keeneland, and she should get a clean, forward trip at a big price. Nitrogen, the class of the field, won’t get it easy up front with Immersive, perhaps Super Corredora is there to make a fight of it early, but she can go fast early and keep going, and can even win from a stalking spot. Regaled clunked on from the clouds for third in this race last year, and with so much pace drawn into the race, she could invade the trifecta or superfecta at a big price again this year.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Turf

Benvenuto Cellini has to bounce back from his last two starts at Longchamp, but both of those came over softer French ground, something that just might not suit this Aidan O’Brien trainee. His form over better ground earlier this year was far smarter, including a victory in the 1 ½-mile Irish Derby and a close third – behind no less than Kalpana and Calandagan – in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (G1) at Ascot, his first start against older horses. He’ll catch better ground at Keeneland. Also appealing is that Ryan Moore shows up here – Christophe Soumillon rides shorter-priced stablemate Diamond Necklace like he did in the Arc, but it was Moore aboard for that one’s earlier Group 1 wins, suggesting some kind of choice for O’Brien’s top rider to stick with Benvenuto Cellini. With the versatility to carve a trip from the relatively inside gate, there’s a lot to like for what will be a square price.

Hotazhell has gone through hot and cold phases in his career, but right now he’s positively sizzling. He has won two straight Group 1 races by just a nose apiece, but showed he was in form against good horses and showed he could win from either the front or off the pace. He has to prove himself at 1 ½ miles, but he’ll catch better ground here, and though this is a quality race, it’s not the Arc, his only 1 ½-mile try so far, last year. Minaret Station gets a class test against top international company, but he has handled 1 ½ miles well in his last two starts, and even three back in the Bowling Green, he impressed by rallying into a dawdling pace and almost getting there. Aidan O’Brien top-stringer Diamond Necklace ran a good third last out in the Arc, her first try at 1 ½ miles; she should be fitter for that attempt, and she seems to handle just about any kind of footing and track beautifully.

2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic

There hasn’t been a more impressive 1 ¼-mile dirt effort this year than the one Knightsbridge put up in the Pacific Classic (G1), where he did all the dirty work on a strong pace and just kept running to win by 6 ¼ lengths. For a horse who had spent so much of his career as an extended one-turn type like his Grade 1-winning half-brother Speaker’s Corner, he has been a revelation in his pair of two-turn tries. There is other speed in this race, but judging from his last-out effort (and even some stalking trips earlier in his career), that should be no problem. Knightsbridge is the best 1 ¼-mile horse in the country right now, and the fact that he’ll probably be the third betting choice in this field means it’s time to bet him with both hands.

Knightsbridge’s biggest challenge late in the race is likely to come from his shedrow buddy Sovereignty, last year’s Kentucky Derby winner. It’s a concern that he missed his last prep, but he has been training regularly into this spot, and the fact that they kept him in alongside Knightsbridge instead of scratching him again telegraphs a level of confidence. There’s enough speed to set up nicely for him, but even if there’s a speed bias and he has to sit a little forward, he has proven he can do that, too. This year’s Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo is another horse who, like Sovereignty, is a dyed-in-the-wool 1 ¼-mile horse with a strong closing kick. His third-place finish in the Travers was a good one given how well speed held, and this is likely to be a better setup in his first try against older. Forever Young needs to improve from the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), but that was just a prep where he did enough to get his hooves back under him. A repeat in the Classic is always an underlay proposition, but five-year-old horses who have never run a clunker are few and far between, meaning he should at least find the frame.
