The San Francisco Giants appear well on their way to an NL West division title — the club's first since 2012. Aside from that notable honor, the Giants may win another unofficial MLB award. That would be for the strangest play of the 2021 season.

Check out the video below of Giants catcher Curt Casali getting called for a catcher's balk. This was a small mistake on the official scorer's part, calling this play a balk. However, the play was still ruled a violation and both runners were awarded for an extra base.

For those baseball lovers and rules sticklers out there, the official rule definition that Casali broke is MLB Rule 5.06(b)(3)(E).

A fielder deliberately touches a pitched ball with his cap, mask or any part of his uniform detached from its proper place on his person. The ball is in play, and the award is made from the position of the runner at the time the ball was touched.

The play happened in the bottom of the second inning in San Francisco's 3-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. It actually made a huge difference in the box score. Arizona plated three runs in that inning, including a two-run double by Asdrubal Cabrera (at bat in this bizarre play) to score both runners that had advanced.
