College Football Picks and Predictions

Rutgers +3.5 (-115)

Rutgers at Boston College, 7:30 p.m. ET

I'm taking the points with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Friday night's matchup at the Boston College Eagles.

The Scarlet Knights looked awful in their opener against UMass, but there are reasons to expect a better performance here. Rutgers' biggest offensive issue could get a boost from AJ Surace taking over at quarterback after Dylan Lonergan suffered an injury; Surace completed 6-of-9 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown after entering against UMass.

Rutgers also struggled mightily with turnovers in Week 1, and that’s something that can be a bit random from week to week.

Boston College wasn't a ton better in Week 1, falling 34-21 to Cincinnati while allowing four sacks. The Eagles struggled to protect quarterback Mason McKenzie, which could be problematic if Rutgers' defense can generate pressure.

Rutgers also has a legitimate playmaker in KJ Duff, who erupted for 196 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the opener. If the Scarlet Knights can cut down on the turnovers that doomed them against UMass, I think they have enough offense to stay within a field goal.

Mason McKenzie Over 61.5 Rushing Yards (-114)

Rutgers at Boston College, 7:30 p.m. ET

Sticking with the Rutgers-BC game, McKenzie to clear 61.5 rushing yards is my favorite Friday prop.

QB rushing props are always tricky for college because sacks count as negative rushing yards, and as we just touched on, Boston College gave up four sacks in its opener. But McKenzie still finished that game with 78 rushing yards thanks to 20 carries. That’s big-time rushing volume for a running back.

Rutgers’ defense struggled last week versus UMass, allowing 31 points and 200 rushing yards, and that makes this a welcoming matchup for McKenzie.

Kansas +5.5 (-105)

Missouri at Kansas, 8:00 p.m. ET

I'm willing to take the points with the Kansas Jayhawks in what should be a much tougher test for both teams than what they saw in their season openers.

Kansas cruised past LIU, 51-6, piling up 613 total yards and 277 yards on the ground. Quarterback Isaiah Marshall threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns while adding 49 rushing yards, giving the Jayhawks a dual-threat element that Missouri will have to account for.

The Missouri Tigers were impressive in their own right, rolling up 562 yards in a 54-14 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Austin Simmons completed 17 of 19 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns, so there is certainly a case to be made that the Tigers are the better team.

But asking Mizzou to win by at least six in Lawrence is a different proposition. Kansas is 6-0 against the spread as a home underdog since 2023, and these teams played a fairly competitive game last season before Missouri eventually pulled away for a 42-31 win.

With home-field advantage and Marshall's ability to create with both his arm and legs, Kansas is the side I want to be on.
