Through seven weeks, the New England Patriots' defense has been the most dominant unit in football. They've allowed a league-low 6.9 points per game, have the most interceptions by a wide margin (18) and have recorded the second-most sacks (26).
As a result, the Patriots defense/special teams (D/ST) has been the best in fantasy football by a country mile. No matter the scoring system, the Patriots D/ST has been exponentially better than the second-best D/ST unit, the San Francisco 49ers, even when you factor in that New England has played one extra game.
The Pats D/ST has been so dominant that they would be ranked in the top six at quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Amazingly, the Patriots D/ST would be the top-ranked tight end through seven weeks.
Patriots Defense Fantasy Points
A big reason for the Pats' success so far has certainly been their schedule, which has included games against the New York Jets (twice), Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Buffalo Bills, all of whom are top 10 in fantasy points allowed to opposing D/STs, according to Yahoo! Fantasy Football scoring.
The Patriots D/ST is lapping the competition, specifically when it comes to opponents' passer ratings. The unit has allowed a passer rating of 35.8 on the season while the rest of the NFL has allowed a combined passer rating of 93.3. The New England defense has allowed just one TD through the air to go along with its league-leading 18 interceptions.
With another plus-matchup this week against the Cleveland Browns, who allow the sixth-most fantasy points to D/STs, the Pats come in as a top-three option in our Week 8 fantasy football defense rankings. And from the looks of it, the Patriots D/ST could also rank that high at other fantasy positions as we eye the second half of the 2019 NFL season.
