It was the exact Week 1 that all James Conner fantasy owners dreaded on Monday Night against the New York Giants. The 2018 breakout star suffered an ankle injury, and after a down season last year with injury after injury for Conner, that's bad news for everyone.

To make matters worse, Benny Snell Jr. stepped in and was more effective than the starter, rushing for 113 yards on 19 attempts (5.9 yards per carry). Now, this backfield has likely become a timeshare moving forward, even if Conner is healthy for Week 2 against the Denver Broncos.

James Conner Fantasy Outlook

In some ways, it might almost have been better if Conner was ruled out for the season in 2019. Instead, most managers had the painful decision of whether or not to play him each and every Sunday, which was sometimes an utter waste when his injury immediately flared up.

These week-to-week injuries are a killer to your fantasy lineup. They not only take up a spot, but they prevent you from signing the proper replacement that's only available for a short period. Conner had that week-to-week status last year, and he's already trending in the same direction in 2020.

Conner had six rushes for nine yards against the same New York Giants defense that got torched by Snell Jr. Even if he's back out there, it's hard to rely on him outperforming his replacement with a bum ankle, especially since he couldn't outperform him when he was healthy.

The best you can hope for from Conner right now is probably PPR value, and considering he had an average draft position that ranged from 37th to 41st overall (depending on format), that's not good as we head into Week 2 of this very young season.
