Utah State Encroaching on Mountain West Title

The 2023-24 college basketball campaign is heating up as we enter the last few regular-season contests. Soon enough, the magical NCAA Tournament will be here. Prior to that, we still have to get through conference tournaments as well.

Yet again, the Mountain West has been an incredibly impressive grouping on the hardwood. Still, the Utah State Aggies -- who currently sit in the MWC driver's seat -- are looking to win their second outright title since the 2018-19 season.

From the college basketball odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, let's see how the market looks for the Mountain West's regular-season winner.

Utah State Aggies (-400)

As noted, Utah State blazed out to a 22-5 overall record. Within conference play, the Aggies are 10-4, a record that leaves them tied atop the Mountain West standings with Boise State.

USU suffered a recent loss in Ft. Collins, but they did well to get back in the win column in the most recent bid. Hosting San Diego State, the Aggies outlasted the Aztecs by a score of 68-63. Moving forward, Utah State has only four regular-season games left; two of those contests will take place in Logan.

At numberFire, USU (11.14 nERD) is ranked 35th in the nation. However, amongst fellow Mountain West teams, that places the Aggies fourth in conference. Keep in mind: this grouping has a collective .610 winning percentage, which is better than all conferences except the Big 12 and SEC.

What makes Utah State's current campaign particularly special is the fact that head coach Danny Sprinkle is in his first season at post. At one point, he and the Aggies snapped off 18 wins through a 19-game stretch.

Averaging 79.6 PPG, this team ranks 53rd of 363 Division I schools in scoring. Of Utah State's four remaining games, they are looking at only one major threat, which is the regular-season finale at home against New Mexico.

San Diego State Aztecs (+650)

Notably, the San Diego State Aztecs were last year's national runner-up. From there, SDSU has also won the Mountain West's regular-season crown three times since 2019-20. As it is now, they show +650 odds at FanDuel Sportsbook to accomplish that same feat again.

San Diego State is third in the conference right now. The Aztecs are 21-7 overall while boasting a 10-5 record against Mountain West foes. That leaves SDSU a half-game behind Utah State with only three regular-season contests to go.

Head coach Brian Dutcher is in his seventh campaign leading the Aztecs. As alluded to, San Diego State has cashed this market three times in Dutcher's tenure. Right now, he has SDSU playing suffocating defense, allowing only 66.0 PPG.

On the schedule, two of the Aztecs' three remaining bids are at home. Still, they show one looming test at UNLV. Prior to that, SDSU is a 21.5-point favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook for Tuesday's bid versus San Jose State.

Back at numberFire, the college basketball power rankings have San Diego State (13.86 nERD) 18th in the country -- and tops in the MWC.

Boise State Broncos (+900)

Hanging tough this year, the Boise State Broncos have shown resilience and skill in 2024. They began the current season by losing three of their first six contests but have since righted the ship. With nine-to-one odds to be named as the Mountain West's regular-season winner, BSU is certainly an intriguing option in this market.

Boise State is in Year 14 with head coach Leon Rice at the helm. His group has played to 19-8 overall this season, but the Broncos' 10-4 MWC record is tied with Utah State entering Tuesday. Speaking of that, BSU is a 9.5-point road favorite at FanDuel for Tuesday's bid at Air Force.

After Tuesday, the Broncos conclude the regular season with three games against top Mountain West teams. If Boise State is to win out, they will have earned it going through New Mexico, Nevada and San Diego State.

Like others in this grouping, BSU is grounded behind stout defense. They have held opponents to 66.9 PPG in 2023-24, which is the sort of play that travels well. Still, what will that look like in the Broncos' approaching finale at SDSU?

For reference, Boise State last cashed this market as recently as 2021-22; a regular-season title here would mark two in three years for the Broncos.
