USA vs. Vietnam Analysis

The USWNT begin their quest for a third consecutive World Cup as heavy favorites against Vietnam. They enter the tournament as favorites to win it all (+220), with both the favorite to win the Golden Boot, Alex Morgan (+450), and the favorite to win the Golden Glove, Alyssa Naeher (+380), on their squad.

The United States enter Friday on an excellent run of form. Following a shocking three-match losing streak to England, Spain, and Germany last October, the USWNT rebounded, winning nine matches in a row by a combined score of 21-2. That streak includes triumphs over Canada, Japan, and Brazil in the SheBelieves Cup in February.

On the other side of the pitch, Vietnam are making their World Cup debut and enter Friday tied with nine other teams for the worst odds to win the tournament. They secured their spot in the field by winning a three-team playoff against Chinese Taipei and Thailand after being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Women's Asian Cup by China.

Since then, they have lost four consecutive games against South Korea, France, Germany, and New Zealand by a combined score of 14-1. Their one goal came in a 2-1 defeat to Germany, an impressive result against a German side with the fourth-best odds to win the World Cup (+700).

The United States opened the 2019 World Cup with a 13-0 victory over Thailand. While a repeat of that scoreline would be a difficult task, the outlook for this match is similar.

With a crucial clash against the Netherlands -- the runners-up from the 2019 World Cup -- up next, the USWNT have the opportunity to start their tournament with an overwhelming victory and carry positive momentum into that fixture. The drastic difference in experience and talent between these two sides, combined with the importance goal differential plays in the group stages, could result in the United States scoring early and often on Friday.
