Seahawks Hosting Rams in Week 1: Moneyline, Spread, Total, and Storylines

In Week 1 of the 2023-24 NFL season, the Seattle Seahawks are set to face the Los Angeles Rams in the Pacific Northwest.

Led by Geno Smith, the Seahawks will look to build off their playoff appearance last year. On the other side, Cooper Kupp and Matthew Stafford -- both back from injury -- will try to resurge the Rams.

Rams vs. Seahawks Week 1: Storylines to Follow

  • Rams
    • How will Matthew Stafford fare?
      • A year after winning his first Super Bowl ring, Stafford saw his 2022 season go up in flames after dealing with injuries to his elbow and back. Reports suggest he will be ready for the upcoming season, but even when he played in 2022, Stafford's numbers weren't very good. He took big steps back -- compared to 2021 -- in adjusted yards per attempt (6.4) and QBR (50.3). If LA is going to bounce back, they'll need Stafford to be better. If Stafford struggles, head coach Sean McVay could turn to two-time college national champion Stetson Bennett, who the Rams picked in the fourth round.
    • What will Cooper Kupp look like returning from ankle surgery?
      • Like Stafford, Cooper Kupp had a career year in 2021, dominating opposing defensive backs on a weekly basis en route to winning the receiving triple crown. That was something not accomplished outright since Sterling Sharpe did it in 1992. But after that season of ultra-rampant usage (145 receptions), Kupp was healthy enough to play just nine games in 2022. All reports suggest he is on track to start the new year with a clean bill of health. Be that as it may, will we see him anywhere near his productivity level from 2021? Kupp can still have a fantastic campaign without going over 1,900 yards, and his output will obviously be tied to how well Stafford plays.
  • Seahawks
    • Can Geno Smith recreate last year's offensive magic?
      • Smith is coming off -- by far -- his best NFL season. With Seattle beginning the 2022 campaign with whispers of a rebuild in mind, no one expected Seattle to land in the playoffs, led by Smith's 69.8% completion rate (tops among starting quarterbacks). He also threw for 30 touchdowns and for more than 4,200 yards, which helped Smith earn the 2022-23 AP Comeback Player of the Year. To make matters sweeter for the "Emerald City," the Seahawks added another dynamic weapon to play alongside D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett; That would be Jaxon Smith-Njigba, drafted 20th overall last April. Tight end Noah Fant is also a quality pass-game piece. From there, Seattle is deep in the backfield. Young guns Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet will provide Smith with a quality ground game to lean on when necessary. It may be tough for Smith to top his play from last year, but he will have every opportunity to do so.
    • Will the return of Bobby Wagner bring the defense up to speed?
      • After leaving Seattle for a season, Bobby Wagner is back and will immediately get a chance in Week 1 to let the Rams know how he really felt about his lone year in Los Angeles. On the Seahawks' end, they certainly missed Wagner's presence in 2022; Seattle surrendered 2,554 total rushing yards to their opposition, which was third-most in the NFL. If they can strengthen the defensive front, they absolutely have talent behind them in the secondary. On the outside, the Seahawks employ Tariq Woolen, who has established himself as a quality corner after only one season. Additionally, Seattle used the fifth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to select fellow corner Devon Witherspoon. With the reinsertion of Wagner's play and leadership, it is possible we see a new installment of "The Legion of Boom."
