2024 Preakness Stakes Expert Predictions

Watch below as FanDuel TV's experts share their predictions and picks for the 2024 Preakness Stakes.

Matt Bernier
#8 Tuscan Gold (8-1)

The scratch of morning line favorite Muth from Preakness 149 on Wednesday -- a bit of a curveball for everyone to deal with.

Now, you search around, do you go to the Derby winner, Mystik Dan? No.

Do you go to one of the Lukas runners? No.

Do you go to Brad Cox or the other Bob Baffert entrant? No.

Give me the #8, Tuscan Gold, 8-1 on the morning line.

I think for Chad Brown, he gets his third Preakness win on Saturday afternoon in the same fashion. Fourth lifetime start on the heels of a loss in a Derby prep.

Give me the #8, Tuscan Gold, in Preakness 149.

Christina Blacker
#8 Tuscan Gold (8-1)

Just when you think you have it all figured out, the morning line favorite scratches.

With the scratch of Muth, I will pivot to the #8 horse, Tuscan Gold, in this year's Preakness.

Reason being: I'm concerned about the quick turnaround for Mystik Dan.

I'm concerned about the quick turnaround and the pace scenario for Catching Freedom.

Tuscan Gold is up and coming. He's fresh, and he will be very close to the pace.

Chad Brown has won this race twice before with horses with this exact profile.

So, we'll take the #8, Tuscan Gold, in the Preakness.

Dave Weaver
#7 Just Steel (15-1)

Just Steel could be this year's upset winner in the Preakness Stakes.

He didn't run his best race in the Kentucky Derby, but D. Wayne Lukas has done this before.

Remember 2013: Oxbow ran sixth at the Derby and came back and pulled off the upset in the Preakness Stakes.

That's my long shot: 15-1 on the morning line, Just Steel, #7 in the Preakness. Good luck.

Kyle Levy
#5 Mystik Dan (5-2)

I'll be honest, I didn't have Mystik Dan winning the Kentucky Derby, but after seeing that perfect ride by Brian Hernandez and that insane photo finish, I can't not root for him in the Preakness.

And hey, if we're gonna be getting +250 on Mystik Dan in it, I'll honestly take that.

If he's able to show up today off a short layoff, he's the one to beat in my eyes.

And I think that this 1-and-3/16 mile distance, it fits him perfectly.

So, that's who I've got winning leg two of the Triple Crown.

Joaquin Jaime
#3 Catching Freedom (6-1)

The middle jewel of racing's Triple Crown is on Saturday in the 149th Preakness Stakes.

And for my top selection in this race, I'm going right back to who I selected in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago.

That's going to be the #3 horse, Catching Freedom, for me.

I thought he ran very well on the first Saturday in May, finishing a close fourth right behind Mystik Dan. He's very consistent. He rarely runs a bad race, and he's really improved in his last couple of starts for me.

We are expecting some rain on Saturday out here in Baltimore.

If the racetrack comes up sloppy, he does have some experience where he ran decent enough over a sloppy racetrack down New Orleans.

So, for me, the top pick in the Preakness Stakes is going to be the #3 horse, Catching Freedom.
