NHL Single-Game Daily Fantasy Picks and Helper: Capitals at Devils 10/25/23

We've got just one NHL game on tap for tonight, but that doesn't mean we can't get in some daily fantasy action. Let's break down how to attack single-game fantasy contests on FanDuel tonight.
A back-to-back scenario for both teams, Wednesday's one game sees the Washington Capitals travel to take on the New Jersey Devils. The Devils are -255 favorites in this game, and the total is sitting at 6.5 goals, according to the NHL odds from FanDuel Sportsbook.

Captain Picks
The Devils are coming off of a 5-2 win last night over the Montreal Canadiens, and two of their players look to be excellent captain picks off the back of that.
Tyler Toffoli ($12,000) had a hat trick last night and has four goals in his last two games. It seems unlikely that he would have been too popular of a captain selection before his hat trick, but the percentage of users placing him in the captain spot will likely be on the rise.
Toffoli isn't a bad captain pick regardless because of his volume shooting. He also plays with Jack Hughes ($16,000) at both even strength and on the power play.
Speaking of Hughes, he's been on an absolute tear and definitely can be used as a captain. He has 14 points in five games and multiple-point outings in four of five games. That is good enough to be the league's leading scorer so far.
Some off-the-radar captain options from the Devils are Timo Meier ($13,000) and Jesper Bratt ($11,500). Meier has been off to a slow start but had more than 40 goals last season. Bratt is tied for the 10th-most points in the NHL and has the potential for multiple points in this game.
For the Capitals, the best captain pick is old reliable -- Alex Ovechkin ($13,500). He finally opened his goal-scoring account this season with his first yesterday. It was extremely encouraging to see him have 14 shots on goal last night after his slow start to the season.
No player has the shot ceiling that Ovechkin demonstrated on Tuesday. This also means that he can be the highest-scoring player in this game even without multiple real-world points. If this game doesn't have many goals, Ovechkin's shot volume could go a long way toward making him the best captain.
Flex Breakdown
Like in regular daily fantasy hockey, we want to have some degree of correlation. If we're playing a captain, getting at least one of his linemates makes sense.
If you're captaining Ovechkin, Dylan Strome ($9,500) is nearly a necessity. He plays with Ovechkin at even strength and on the power play, and his salary is not too high. I'd also consider John Carlson ($12,500) in any lineup with Ovechkin at captain, as Carlson's job on the power play is simply to set up the Russian with one-timers.
Alexander Holtz ($6,500) had a goal for the Devils last night and plays on the power play. He was the seventh overall pick in 2020, so he definitely has more talent than most players who are listed at this salary.
Another Devil who is a good value with power-play time is Luke Hughes ($7,500). He hasn't been the best producer so far for fantasy, but he continues to get opportunities with the man-advantage. You can play him when captaining his brother Jack, as they've seen time on the same power-play unit.
If you need someone for the minimum salary, Connor McMichael ($6,000) plays in Washington's top-six forward group and is your best bet down at the bottom salary tier.
